00:00:00.079 hi this is Steve Holland with Holland's 00:00:02.81000:00:02.820 home services and heat-exchanger safety 00:00:05.09000:00:05.100 dot-com this episode we're going to talk 00:00:07.07000:00:07.080 about heat exchanger safety and carbon 00:00:08.69000:00:08.700 monoxide and some of the common myths 00:00:10.52000:00:10.530 associated with heat exchangers and heat 00:00:12.20000:00:12.210 exchanger safety 00:00:47.79000:00:47.800 now let's talk about one of the common 00:00:50.04000:00:50.050 myths with heat exchangers many service 00:00:52.89000:00:52.900 technicians today believe that the only 00:00:55.14000:00:55.150 time a heat exchanger has failed is when 00:00:57.00000:00:57.010 they find a crack that's a myth 00:00:58.92000:00:58.930 I'm going to share with you some heat 00:01:00.00000:01:00.010 exchangers that I found throughout the 00:01:01.56000:01:01.570 years from our service technicians that 00:01:03.78000:01:03.790 are out there inspecting these things 00:01:04.95000:01:04.960 and share with you the different types 00:01:06.45000:01:06.460 of problems with heat exchangers the 00:01:08.49000:01:08.500 cracked heat exchanger is one that is 00:01:10.46900:01:10.479 very very common and this is a furnace 00:01:12.96000:01:12.970 that was actually only this one was 00:01:15.09000:01:15.100 installed was two and a half years old 00:01:17.13000:01:17.140 and we found the failure in 2011 and as 00:01:21.09000:01:21.100 you can see and I should have a sharpie 00:01:23.13000:01:23.140 here I can actually point it out there 00:01:25.95000:01:25.960 is a very small fracture right here on 00:01:29.60900:01:29.619 this heat exchanger we call this the 00:01:31.02000:01:31.030 washboard section of the heat exchanger 00:01:32.82000:01:32.830 and that failure is right there that's a 00:01:35.52000:01:35.530 temperature stress point so we can see 00:01:38.16000:01:38.170 that that one has failed that is a crack 00:01:39.78000:01:39.790 team exchanger another type of heat 00:01:42.27000:01:42.280 exchanger failure is a bulge as you can 00:01:45.45000:01:45.460 see this is from a mobile home and as 00:01:47.58000:01:47.590 you can see right here there's a very 00:01:49.74000:01:49.750 large bulge 00:01:50.88000:01:50.890 that's another temperature problem and 00:01:52.68000:01:52.690 that was a that was a manufacturer's 00:01:54.63000:01:54.640 defect unfortunately but it's they did 00:01:57.02900:01:57.039 take care of it it is taken care of now 00:01:58.59000:01:58.600 but that ball jet metal is ready to 00:02:00.60000:02:00.610 rupture at any point then we have 00:02:03.51000:02:03.520 another common problem with heat 00:02:04.85900:02:04.869 exchangers let's suppose you go in your 00:02:07.38000:02:07.390 diagnosis system or you're going to be 00:02:08.99900:02:09.009 on it you're going to go on a tune-up 00:02:10.02000:02:10.030 and you're going to check over the 00:02:11.04000:02:11.050 furnace and you find no cracks that does 00:02:13.23000:02:13.240 not mean that the heat exchanger has not 00:02:14.67000:02:14.680 failed here's one that a lot of 00:02:17.73000:02:17.740 technicians miss and it's a plug 00:02:20.07000:02:20.080 secondary this particular heat exchanger 00:02:22.94900:02:22.959 the primary heat exchanger on this 00:02:24.44900:02:24.459 furnace was fine if we would have done a 00:02:26.76000:02:26.770 test on it and just look for a cracked 00:02:29.61000:02:29.620 heat exchanger we'd have never found it 00:02:31.11000:02:31.120 this particular furnace was putting out 00:02:33.05900:02:33.069 over 2,000 parts per million carbon 00:02:34.62000:02:34.630 monoxide on the exhaust all because it 00:02:36.87000:02:36.880 had a plug secondary heat exchanger and 00:02:39.05900:02:39.069 if you look at it very closely which you 00:02:40.74000:02:40.750 can't really see but down inside here 00:02:42.60000:02:42.610 there's actually pitting in holes inside 00:02:45.54000:02:45.550 here so that's another common problem 00:02:47.94000:02:47.950 the heat exchanger 00:02:49.83000:02:49.840 that that would would cause it to cause 00:02:53.13000:02:53.140 the furnace to fail or become super 00:02:54.69000:02:54.700 inefficient over here 00:02:57.09000:02:57.100 we have a heat exchanger that doesn't 00:02:58.53000:02:58.540 look so bad right all it is is a tubular 00:03:00.93000:03:00.940 heat 00:03:01.48000:03:01.490 danger but if you notice the black foot 00:03:03.31000:03:03.320 this heat exchanger was suited up this 00:03:05.98000:03:05.990 one as well was putting out about 00:03:07.21000:03:07.220 fifteen to sixteen hundred parts per 00:03:08.71000:03:08.720 million carbon monoxide all because a 00:03:10.96000:03:10.970 restrictor disk was left off on the 00:03:13.00000:03:13.010 furnace so one simple little part was 00:03:15.28000:03:15.290 left off caused this furnace to stood up 00:03:17.32000:03:17.330 and cause high levels of carbon monoxide 00:03:18.81000:03:18.820 so those are some of the common problems 00:03:20.89000:03:20.900 with heat exchangers we have plug heat 00:03:22.93000:03:22.940 exchangers we have cracked heat 00:03:24.70000:03:24.710 exchangers we have ruptured or bulging 00:03:27.70000:03:27.710 heat exchangers so did heat exchangers 00:03:30.52000:03:30.530 those are the most common and I'm Steve 00:03:33.31000:03:33.320 Holland with Holland home services and 00:03:35.32000:03:35.330 heat exchanger safety dot-com I hope you
