what's up everybody welcome back to the
00:00:01.969 00:00:01.979 episode of outlawed motors today we are
00:00:04.160 00:00:04.170 talking about upgrading the minis oil
00:00:05.869 00:00:05.879 cooling situation because it's pretty
00:00:08.419 00:00:08.429 sad like this little oil cooler
00:00:10.700 00:00:10.710 [Applause]
00:00:19.070 00:00:19.080 much as I love driving and working on my
00:00:22.460 00:00:22.470 Mini there is plenty to be desired when
00:00:24.410 00:00:24.420 it comes to how things were designed in
00:00:27.170 00:00:27.180 and and around the engine which I have
00:00:29.270 00:00:29.280 done my best to try to alleviate and
00:00:31.670 00:00:31.680 improve many of those things as to be
00:00:34.640 00:00:34.650 expected most auto manufacturers are
00:00:37.010 00:00:37.020 designing their cars for the road and
00:00:38.780 00:00:38.790 balancing economy performance and ease
00:00:41.900 00:00:41.910 of maintenance a lot of the time
00:00:43.910 00:00:43.920 performance is sacrificed you know just
00:00:47.180 00:00:47.190 for the sake of cost as well as being
00:00:50.090 00:00:50.100 overkill for what most people will be
00:00:52.910 00:00:52.920 doing with their cars as soon as you
00:00:54.470 00:00:54.480 start demanding more out of your engine
00:00:56.450 00:00:56.460 you are putting your engine internals
00:00:58.340 00:00:58.350 and your turbo at risk because you are
00:01:01.069 00:01:01.079 risking overheating your engine most
00:01:03.920 00:01:03.930 modern cars cooling and oiling systems
00:01:06.499 00:01:06.509 are very well designed for the road but
00:01:08.960 00:01:08.970 as soon as you start hunting for
00:01:10.430 00:01:10.440 performance their weak points start to
00:01:13.130 00:01:13.140 show and that is no exception with the
00:01:15.560 00:01:15.570 mini the minis oiling and cooling system
00:01:17.870 00:01:17.880 leaves a lot to be desired and
00:01:19.430 00:01:19.440 especially since this car is seeing
00:01:22.749 00:01:22.759 extreme conditions such as going on the
00:01:25.790 00:01:25.800 track and a little bit of Canyon driving
00:01:27.830 00:01:27.840 it is due for an oil cooling upgrade one
00:01:30.440 00:01:30.450 of the biggest problems with the mini
00:01:31.609 00:01:31.619 soil cooling system is it's got this
00:01:33.559 00:01:33.569 tiny little oil cooler which is fine for
00:01:36.410 00:01:36.420 daily commuting and on the road but as
00:01:38.180 00:01:38.190 soon as you start tracking your car this
00:01:40.190 00:01:40.200 thing is not going to cut it and the
00:01:42.230 00:01:42.240 reason is because you want to keep your
00:01:44.389 00:01:44.399 oil within a certain operating
00:01:45.919 00:01:45.929 temperature otherwise as soon as your
00:01:48.020 00:01:48.030 oil is above its operating temperature
00:01:49.460 00:01:49.470 range the oil starts to break down and
00:01:50.990 00:01:51.000 isn't gonna be able to maintain its
00:01:52.940 00:01:52.950 lubricating properties like it's too
00:01:54.680 00:01:54.690 thick it's not gonna be able to turn
00:01:57.410 00:01:57.420 into a microfilm and seat between metal
00:02:01.279 00:02:01.289 on metal such as bearings and if it's
00:02:03.559 00:02:03.569 too hot it won't have the viscosity to
00:02:06.589 00:02:06.599 actually keep metal on metal from
00:02:09.169 00:02:09.179 wearing down as well as it'll start
00:02:11.449 00:02:11.459 breaking down the oil so in order to
00:02:13.100 00:02:13.110 alleviate that I am upgrading this sad
00:02:15.800 00:02:15.810 little oil cooler to a much much larger
00:02:19.400 00:02:19.410 one a 13 row which is going to sit right
00:02:22.100 00:02:22.110 here
00:02:23.180 00:02:23.190 a special thanks to HCl for hooking me
00:02:25.339 00:02:25.349 up with this oil cooler setup this is a
00:02:27.140 00:02:27.150 pretty conventional setup before the
00:02:28.880 00:02:28.890 Mini Cooper if you're tracking your car
00:02:30.500 00:02:30.510 this is a 13 row system it
00:02:32.760 00:02:32.770 with an awesome locale thermostat made
00:02:35.370 00:02:35.380 in the UK and everything is top-notch
00:02:37.710 00:02:37.720 they could do all the aan fittings which
00:02:39.690 00:02:39.700 are 10 a n as well as stainless steel
00:02:42.210 00:02:42.220 lines oil coolers work very similar to
00:02:44.280 00:02:44.290 your radiator or your intercooler as
00:02:46.040 00:02:46.050 fluid or air run through the tubes these
00:02:49.170 00:02:49.180 fins can cool it down the reason being
00:02:51.540 00:02:51.550 you've got a much larger surface area
00:02:53.460 00:02:53.470 and as you're driving the wind is
00:02:55.500 00:02:55.510 constantly blowing it and cooling it
00:02:57.930 00:02:57.940 down so the same principle goes with an
00:03:01.080 00:03:01.090 oil cooler as long as this is mounted in
00:03:04.020 00:03:04.030 a reasonable spot where it's getting
00:03:06.180 00:03:06.190 good air you have oil coming from the
00:03:08.340 00:03:08.350 engine into here and then coming back
00:03:10.260 00:03:10.270 and cooling it and making sure that it's
00:03:13.290 00:03:13.300 within a certain operating temperature
00:03:15.240 00:03:15.250 now you do have to be cautious that you
00:03:16.950 00:03:16.960 are not running too many radiators in
00:03:19.380 00:03:19.390 front of one another as you stack them
00:03:21.780 00:03:21.790 less air flows gets to the ones behind
00:03:24.120 00:03:24.130 it so as I'm planning on putting this
00:03:26.520 00:03:26.530 here I am well aware that I am blocking
00:03:29.070 00:03:29.080 a little bit of cooling to the actual
00:03:31.170 00:03:31.180 radiator
00:03:31.720 00:03:31.730 [Music]
00:04:15.279 00:04:15.289 one thing I learned quickly when I was
00:04:17.479 00:04:17.489 routing the stainless steel oil lines is
00:04:19.390 00:04:19.400 not to cut them free hand without any
00:04:22.370 00:04:22.380 tape really not done a nice job even if
00:04:27.260 00:04:27.270 you have the most steady hand or the
00:04:30.080 00:04:30.090 fastest blade use tape and then cut the
00:04:33.409 00:04:33.419 stainless steel braid otherwise you'll
00:04:35.570 00:04:35.580 find yourself buying $85 worth of more
00:04:38.210 00:04:38.220 of six foot hosing the problem is
00:04:41.300 00:04:41.310 because the oil line runs right beside
00:04:44.029 00:04:44.039 the downpipe and although there is heat
00:04:46.339 00:04:46.349 shielding this is just some nice safe
00:04:48.980 00:04:48.990 insurance because these are these the
00:04:51.770 00:04:51.780 coolant lines and the oil lines are
00:04:53.480 00:04:53.490 rather close to each other I'd rather be
00:04:55.580 00:04:55.590 safe than sorry
00:04:57.409 00:04:57.419 and protect them from any any heat that
00:05:01.310 00:05:01.320 might occur just like you don't want
00:05:03.080 00:05:03.090 your engine's oil to be too hot and
00:05:04.820 00:05:04.830 therefore not viscous enough to prevent
00:05:06.890 00:05:06.900 metal and metal wear you also don't want
00:05:09.080 00:05:09.090 it to be too cold hence why you don't
00:05:11.629 00:05:11.639 want to stress your engine when you've
00:05:13.790 00:05:13.800 just started it up you don't need to
00:05:15.710 00:05:15.720 snot drive your car but you want to
00:05:17.270 00:05:17.280 bring your engine up to operating
00:05:19.279 00:05:19.289 temperature before you really start
00:05:20.839 00:05:20.849 thrashing on it it's almost essential
00:05:22.640 00:05:22.650 that you run a thermostat on your oil
00:05:24.499 00:05:24.509 cooler setup if you are taking your car
00:05:27.140 00:05:27.150 on the road because there is going to be
00:05:29.060 00:05:29.070 times where you are not driving it to
00:05:31.370 00:05:31.380 its fullest extent and therefore is
00:05:33.560 00:05:33.570 totally unnecessary if your engines oil
00:05:36.980 00:05:36.990 is not hot enough then it is not going
00:05:40.010 00:05:40.020 to have the lubricating properties it's
00:05:41.779 00:05:41.789 designed for now there's different types
00:05:43.460 00:05:43.470 of thermostats you can run depending on
00:05:45.230 00:05:45.240 your applications there are some
00:05:46.550 00:05:46.560 thermostats that are sandwiched between
00:05:47.899 00:05:47.909 your oil filter and your oil filter
00:05:49.339 00:05:49.349 housing but in this case mine is
00:05:51.620 00:05:51.630 suspended between a n lines the way the
00:05:54.620 00:05:54.630 thermostat works is that as oil enters
00:05:56.719 00:05:56.729 the thermostat if it's not up to
00:05:58.730 00:05:58.740 operating temperature it cycles back
00:06:00.409 00:06:00.419 around and enters back into the oil
00:06:02.510 00:06:02.520 filter housing as soon as the oil is up
00:06:05.510 00:06:05.520 to temp it passes through and into your
00:06:08.029 00:06:08.039 oil cooler the other added benefit is
00:06:09.620 00:06:09.630 that this will not only just help you at
00:06:11.570 00:06:11.580 startup and make sure that it's not just
00:06:13.550 00:06:13.560 using the oil cooler once it's out
00:06:15.620 00:06:15.630 operating temperature if you're driving
00:06:17.510 00:06:17.520 on a colder day this is going to be too
00:06:20.420 00:06:20.430 efficient for your engine you don't want
00:06:22.100 00:06:22.110 to be just cruising down the highway and
00:06:23.570 00:06:23.580 bringing your coil temps below where
00:06:26.120 00:06:26.130 they should be this will also help by
00:06:27.890 00:06:27.900 closing off the oil cooler if you are
00:06:29.689 00:06:29.699 not stressing your engine when you're
00:06:31.279 00:06:31.289 just putting around the lower ones to
00:06:35.180 00:06:35.190 the engine top one views from the engine
00:06:39.080 00:06:39.090 one of the spring is
00:06:42.390 00:06:42.400 hopefully sit right there
00:06:45.429 00:06:45.439 ideally that's not the difference now
00:06:48.189 00:06:48.199 I've still gotta figure out where this
00:06:49.600 00:06:49.610 thermostat goes I don't want it to have
00:06:51.579 00:06:51.589 it too far away from the oil plate so I
00:06:55.509 00:06:55.519 am considering putting it here but if
00:06:57.939 00:06:57.949 I'm gonna test the fitment of the
00:06:59.199 00:06:59.209 radiator support and if everything fits
00:07:01.899 00:07:01.909 well I am kind of guessing it's gonna go
00:07:04.509 00:07:04.519 here I was a little worried that this
00:07:06.939 00:07:06.949 doesn't have a mounting bracket but
00:07:08.619 00:07:08.629 given how rigid the stainless steel
00:07:11.529 00:07:11.539 lines are I actually can start to
00:07:14.499 00:07:14.509 understand why you don't need this I
00:07:16.059 00:07:16.069 might not even need this piece at all I
00:07:17.799 00:07:17.809 think it might just be able to sit right
00:07:20.589 00:07:20.599 here and as long as it's secured or
00:07:22.509 00:07:22.519 zip-tied away from anything like the fin
00:07:25.779 00:07:25.789 or anything that it could rattle against
00:07:28.149 00:07:28.159 I think it should be fine to just be a
00:07:30.669 00:07:30.679 standalone piece so let's put the rat on
00:07:34.839 00:07:34.849 and see where we can put this on already
00:07:39.219 00:07:39.229 no
00:07:48.059 00:07:48.069 this tube I didn't know don't know why
00:07:50.439 00:07:50.449 even didn't think about this but this
00:07:51.879 00:07:51.889 tube has to run down into the
00:07:55.110 00:07:55.120 intercooler over there so I've got to
00:07:59.140 00:07:59.150 find a reasonable place put everything
00:08:01.900 00:08:01.910 but it's a good thing I put the heat
00:08:03.909 00:08:03.919 shields for the oil right there the the
00:08:06.900 00:08:06.910 blanket because if the oil is hot or
00:08:10.689 00:08:10.699 cold it's pretty much touching the fan
00:08:12.939 00:08:12.949 we should check the fit mate okay so
00:08:19.480 00:08:19.490 I've got a couple potential problems
00:08:23.680 00:08:23.690 areas but nothing I don't think I can I
00:08:28.450 00:08:28.460 think I could probably solve all them I
00:08:31.680 00:08:31.690 have a question for you
00:08:35.310 00:08:35.320 wonderful I have some heat sleeves over
00:08:37.779 00:08:37.789 the stainless steel braid because on the
00:08:40.690 00:08:40.700 left is where the heat shield is for the
00:08:43.510 00:08:43.520 downpipe so that's what's pressing up
00:08:46.360 00:08:46.370 against the fan no no so just the back
00:08:52.389 00:08:52.399 motor like the back motor which doesn't
00:08:54.370 00:08:54.380 move so just a metal what do you call it
00:08:57.180 00:08:57.190 00:09:11.400 00:09:11.410 that much
00:09:19.040 00:09:19.050 all right now one thing I realized was
00:09:22.830 00:09:22.840 this was tweaking this oil line a little
00:09:27.240 00:09:27.250 bit so I wanted to make sure that this
00:09:30.570 00:09:30.580 wasn't pinching so this had proper oil
00:09:33.240 00:09:33.250 flow it still looks like it's not so
00:09:39.090 00:09:39.100 happy in trying to accommodate this line
00:09:42.180 00:09:42.190 from not pinching and moving this down I
00:09:44.430 00:09:44.440 have again interfered with the fan so I
00:09:48.450 00:09:48.460 could technically run this these two
00:09:50.760 00:09:50.770 lines out and around but I prefer since
00:09:55.920 00:09:55.930 I've already cut these to run them kind
00:09:58.740 00:09:58.750 of over here like so and have the
00:10:01.650 00:10:01.660 thermostat kind of tucked in behind here
00:10:13.090 00:10:13.100 I found a reasonable solution for this
00:10:15.850 00:10:15.860 and not pinching this oil line this
00:10:18.700 00:10:18.710 actually turns and I'm assuming it turns
00:10:21.670 00:10:21.680 actually so that it can accommodate
00:10:23.040 00:10:23.050 tweaking anything like that but I was
00:10:25.570 00:10:25.580 really not comfortable with that coolant
00:10:28.180 00:10:28.190 line bending at all I mean it's just not
00:10:32.290 00:10:32.300 a comforting idea to just have that kind
00:10:34.930 00:10:34.940 of crimping there so I was able to
00:10:37.950 00:10:37.960 reposition this and by cutting off the
00:10:41.260 00:10:41.270 smallest little piece it doesn't push
00:10:44.110 00:10:44.120 back and crimp this anymore and that way
00:10:46.690 00:10:46.700 I can keep this oil line up here and
00:10:48.880 00:10:48.890 running over and happy and everything
00:10:52.300 00:10:52.310 should be good now let's see about
00:10:54.640 00:10:54.650 Fitness the other added benefit to this
00:10:56.200 00:10:56.210 oil cooler plate adapter is that it's
00:10:58.360 00:10:58.370 got two NPT ports so that you can run
00:11:01.150 00:11:01.160 additional sensors I'm gonna run a
00:11:03.340 00:11:03.350 coolant temp sensor there as well as an
00:11:05.650 00:11:05.660 oil pressure sensor there so that I can
00:11:07.570 00:11:07.580 make sure that I know the engines vitals
00:11:10.060 00:11:10.070 first step is going to be adding some
00:11:11.590 00:11:11.600 seam sealer
00:11:12.660 00:11:12.670 00:11:14.780 00:11:14.790 really awkward
00:11:21.400 00:11:21.410 00:11:25.460 00:11:25.470 now from the thermostat to the adapter
00:11:27.260 00:11:27.270 plate I'm running stainless steel lines
00:11:28.820 00:11:28.830 because it a little bit more robust and
00:11:30.350 00:11:30.360 because it's near the downpipe and a lot
00:11:32.720 00:11:32.730 more heat from the thermostat to the oil
00:11:34.670 00:11:34.680 cooler I'm running vibrant nylon hoses
00:11:36.890 00:11:36.900 because they're a lot more flexible and
00:11:38.330 00:11:38.340 can come around here and will be a
00:11:40.460 00:11:40.470 little bit more manageable to get some
00:11:42.440 00:11:42.450 of those harder areas if you've never
00:11:44.570 00:11:44.580 worked with a n lines I would highly
00:11:47.030 00:11:47.040 recommend you practice a bit when you
00:11:49.220 00:11:49.230 are cutting stainless steel or nylon
00:11:51.680 00:11:51.690 make sure you tape measure then cut you
00:11:55.970 00:11:55.980 know kind of just like with anything and
00:11:57.620 00:11:57.630 these are aluminum fittings so they are
00:12:00.500 00:12:00.510 pretty fragile don't use a vise grip
00:12:03.680 00:12:03.690 like I did if you are going to use some
00:12:06.260 00:12:06.270 cardboard around it and you can
00:12:08.300 00:12:08.310 lubricate these areas with a little bit
00:12:10.430 00:12:10.440 of oil just to make sure that it's a
00:12:12.320 00:12:12.330 little bit easier to press this fitting
00:12:14.060 00:12:14.070 on to the actual Bend they are super
00:12:17.540 00:12:17.550 useful and a.n lines are honestly a
00:12:20.300 00:12:20.310 godsend in terms of when you are doing
00:12:22.910 00:12:22.920 extensive modifications and you need to
00:12:25.160 00:12:25.170 make custom solutions you'll see in the
00:12:27.500 00:12:27.510 series I'd use them pretty much
00:12:29.420 00:12:29.430 everywhere for anything from coolant to
00:12:32.330 00:12:32.340 oil to air they're just awesome where
00:12:35.630 00:12:35.640 you run your oil lines will really vary
00:12:37.430 00:12:37.440 depending on your specific car's setup
00:12:39.620 00:12:39.630 for the many I found the best option was
00:12:41.810 00:12:41.820 to run it beside the windshield wash
00:12:43.160 00:12:43.170 your tank but just make sure you're not
00:12:44.960 00:12:44.970 pinching any lines because you don't
00:12:46.970 00:12:46.980 want to restrict oil flow to the oil
00:12:48.770 00:12:48.780 cooler
00:12:50.000 00:12:50.010 00:12:58.840 00:12:58.850 be prepared to do a little bit of
00:13:01.039 00:13:01.049 fabrication and cutting I had to fab up
00:13:03.350 00:13:03.360 to metal brackets on my front bumper
00:13:05.660 00:13:05.670 bracket so that I could mount the oil
00:13:07.429 00:13:07.439 cooler securely as well as cut into the
00:13:10.039 00:13:10.049 plastic radiator mount so that I could
00:13:12.139 00:13:12.149 make sure that I run the lines without
00:13:13.549 00:13:13.559 pinching them once all your oil cooler
00:13:15.829 00:13:15.839 lines are hooked up top up your oil and
00:13:17.809 00:13:17.819 check for any leaks while the engine is
00:13:19.609 00:13:19.619 off you want to make sure that all the
00:13:21.710 00:13:21.720 a.n lines are seated correctly and
00:13:23.720 00:13:23.730 there's no problem Daria's last thing
00:13:26.539 00:13:26.549 you want is oil spewing all over your
00:13:28.759 00:13:28.769 engine bay once you're certain there's
00:13:30.439 00:13:30.449 no oil leaks fire up your car and bring
00:13:32.749 00:13:32.759 your oil up to operating temperature and
00:13:34.429 00:13:34.439 double check for any oil leaks once your
00:13:37.069 00:13:37.079 engine is generating oil pressure this
00:13:39.139 00:13:39.149 is when an oil pressure gauge really
00:13:41.150 00:13:41.160 comes into handy because you can monitor
00:13:43.400 00:13:43.410 any oil pressure drops once your oil is
00:13:46.400 00:13:46.410 up to operating temperature and the
00:13:48.019 00:13:48.029 thermostat for the oil cooler has opened
00:13:49.850 00:13:49.860 allowing oil to flow through the oil
00:13:51.350 00:13:51.360 cooler shut off your car and check your
00:13:53.749 00:13:53.759 dipstick for how much oil you need to
00:13:55.939 00:13:55.949 add to accommodate for the additional
00:13:58.400 00:13:58.410 oil your oil Chloe's going to be using
00:14:00.259 00:14:00.269 every application will vary depending on
00:14:02.840 00:14:02.850 how many rows your oil cooler has and
00:14:04.909 00:14:04.919 how long your lines are for my mini on a
00:14:07.220 00:14:07.230 13 row oil cooler I took about
00:14:09.919 00:14:09.929 additional 1/2 quart of oil now if
00:14:12.710 00:14:12.720 you're not tracking your car or doing
00:14:14.090 00:14:14.100 extensive modifications I would probably
00:14:16.549 00:14:16.559 advise against an oil cooler I think
00:14:18.379 00:14:18.389 it's gonna be a lot more hassle than it
00:14:21.109 00:14:21.119 is worth it and you're not really gonna
00:14:23.479 00:14:23.489 need it if you're doing a little turbo
00:14:25.129 00:14:25.139 upgrade and a couple things here and
00:14:26.569 00:14:26.579 there not really your best option if
00:14:29.509 00:14:29.519 you're tracking your car this will be a
00:14:31.129 00:14:31.139 fantastic option to get the most out of
00:14:33.379 00:14:33.389 your engine and I really don't think
00:14:35.479 00:14:35.489 you're gonna be disappointed if you are
00:14:37.549 00:14:37.559 looking for something as a little bit of
00:14:39.470 00:14:39.480 a better cooling options I do have an
00:14:41.509 00:14:41.519 upcoming video that I'll can't wait to
00:14:43.159 00:14:43.169 share it with you and it's a Canadian
00:14:45.019 00:14:45.029 solution which makes it even better
00:14:46.699 00:14:46.709 thanks so much for watching I hope you
00:14:48.259 00:14:48.269 found this educational entertaining or
00:14:50.629 00:14:50.639 you were able to laugh a little bit of
00:14:52.280 00:14:52.290 my misery really struggling to learn how
00:14:54.650 00:14:54.660 to use a n lines I definitely should
00:14:57.470 00:14:57.480 have looked up some videos before I
00:14:58.879 00:14:58.889 started cutting away if you have any
00:15:00.409 00:15:00.419 comments please feel free to leave them
00:15:02.150 00:15:02.160 down below if I missed anything

00:15:05.120 00:15:05.130 me I am always open to Corrections and
00:15:08.270 00:15:08.280 improving my knowledge because I'm doing
00:15:10.490 00:15:10.500 a lot of this for the first time so
00:15:12.110 00:15:12.120 until next time thanks a lot for
00:15:13.970 00:15:13.980 watching make sure you like subscribe
