00:00:00.030 so we all know there are a ton of 00:00:02.27000:00:02.280 different kinds of furnace problems but 00:00:04.22000:00:04.230 there's got to be some problems that are 00:00:06.07900:00:06.089 more frequent than others and we will be 00:00:07.90900:00:07.919 going over those common offenders coming 00:00:10.00900:00:10.019 up 00:00:17.92000:00:17.930 [Music] 00:00:23.73000:00:23.740 [Applause] 00:00:31.21000:00:31.22000:00:37.47000:00:37.480 hey guys J here with word of advice TV 00:00:40.18000:00:40.190 for those of you that don't know I work 00:00:42.31000:00:42.320 on appliances for a living and a lot of 00:00:43.84000:00:43.850 that is furnace and air conditioning and 00:00:45.67000:00:45.680 I've gotten to a habit of every house I 00:00:47.92000:00:47.930 go to I write down you know what address 00:00:50.47000:00:50.480 I've been to the time I got there the 00:00:53.59000:00:53.600 date and briefly what I did at that 00:00:56.05000:00:56.060 house 00:00:56.68000:00:56.690 so what I did with my records here is I 00:00:59.77000:00:59.780 went over 2017 winter and I marked all 00:01:03.31000:01:03.320 my furnace calls with these red dots 00:01:05.74000:01:05.750 that you see right here I work on more 00:01:08.32000:01:08.330 than just furnaces dryers water heaters 00:01:10.06000:01:10.070 and such 00:01:10.66000:01:10.670 that's why not all of them are furnaces 00:01:12.70000:01:12.710 but all the red dots are furnaces I got 00:01:16.18000:01:16.190 two two books of Records here and this 00:01:18.64000:01:18.650 is partially covering the winter of 2016 00:01:22.35900:01:22.369 just basically from February to March so 00:01:27.03000:01:27.040 kind of like a winter and a half of 00:01:29.89000:01:29.900 Records so I counted up all my furnace 00:01:32.83000:01:32.840 calls that I had and I tallied them up 00:01:36.31000:01:36.320 and I came out to a total of 315 furnace 00:01:40.69000:01:40.700 calls that I did and about one winter 00:01:43.45000:01:43.460 season and maybe a couple months added 00:01:45.28000:01:45.290 to that so a total of 315 and then I 00:01:48.52000:01:48.530 went over and I categorized each one of 00:01:50.89000:01:50.900 the problems that I encountered to come 00:01:53.11000:01:53.120 up with a total of 51 different problems 00:01:57.31000:01:57.320 that I had during that time so then I 00:02:00.07000:02:00.080 went ahead and I tallied up how much 00:02:01.93000:02:01.940 times I encountered the certain problem 00:02:03.88000:02:03.890 and I came up with my list of top ten 00:02:06.04000:02:06.050 problems which you see right here in two 00:02:08.02000:02:08.030 circles so without further delay let's 00:02:10.75000:02:10.760 just dig right in and go over these top 00:02:12.58000:02:12.590 ten offenders so the number one furnace 00:02:15.16000:02:15.170 call there is and this is seriously the 00:02:17.25900:02:17.269 reigning champion this guy's always in 00:02:19.24000:02:19.250 first place in first place is a dirty 00:02:21.94000:02:21.950 flame sensor so out of a total of 315 00:02:25.30000:02:25.310 calls 56 of those were a dirty flame 00:02:28.21000:02:28.220 sensor which nearly doubles second place 00:02:30.67000:02:30.680 and just so we know what I'm talking 00:02:32.89000:02:32.900 about 00:02:33.37000:02:33.380 let's take a quick look at my flame 00:02:35.62000:02:35.630 sensor so when I come across a dirty 00:02:38.28900:02:38.299 flame sensor I usually come to 00:02:39.69900:02:39.709 somebody's house and their complaint is 00:02:41.59000:02:41.600 it seems like my furnace is working 00:02:43.66000:02:43.670 I can hear it turn on in fact I can even 00:02:45.49000:02:45.500 hear my burners coming on but they only 00:02:47.74000:02:47.750 stay on for a few seconds on they shot 00:02:49.42000:02:49.430 right 00:02:49.80000:02:49.810 and that's what I know that almost 00:02:52.72000:02:52.730 guaranteed what they're experiencing is 00:02:54.37000:02:54.380 a dirty flame sensor and all that is is 00:02:56.92000:02:56.930 a stainless steel rod which will be 00:02:59.50000:02:59.510 behind the burners if you look at your 00:03:01.42000:03:01.430 burners usually you can see from the top 00:03:05.14000:03:05.150 where the flame sensor is or if you look 00:03:06.72900:03:06.739 from the bottom here's the igniter 00:03:09.22000:03:09.230 usually we'll have two wires going to it 00:03:11.38000:03:11.390 on the opposite side of the igniter if 00:03:14.14000:03:14.150 you look across the burners on the other 00:03:16.50900:03:16.519 side is usually where the flame sensor 00:03:18.40000:03:18.410 will be not all flame sensors are as 00:03:20.97900:03:20.989 easy to access as mine but many of them 00:03:23.71000:03:23.720 are pretty accessible so you can take it 00:03:26.53000:03:26.540 out make sure you turn it off your 00:03:28.66000:03:28.670 furnace power switch I turned off mine 00:03:30.55000:03:30.560 previously and this is your flame sensor 00:03:34.09000:03:34.100 and this gets dirty with time and once 00:03:36.49000:03:36.500 there's enough build-up on it your 00:03:38.05000:03:38.060 furnace will stop sensing the flame and 00:03:40.33000:03:40.340 all you need to clean this flame sensor 00:03:41.92000:03:41.930 is a scotch brite pad you don't want to 00:03:44.55900:03:44.569 use sandpaper on it dollar bills work 00:03:46.72000:03:46.730 very well - or whatever currency you 00:03:49.09000:03:49.100 have in your wallet so for example I got 00:03:53.83000:03:53.840 a 50 so if you have bigger current so 00:03:57.34000:03:57.350 you definitely want to be careful not to 00:03:59.11000:03:59.120 rip it and stuff but just grab your 00:04:01.24000:04:01.250 flame sensor and press hard on it and go 00:04:07.21000:04:07.220 ahead and rub it I don't know why but 00:04:11.11000:04:11.120 apparently currency clean these flame 00:04:13.53900:04:13.549 sensors very well I generally prefer to 00:04:16.00000:04:16.010 use scotch brite pads actually so you 00:04:20.59000:04:20.600 shine that thing up and your furnace 00:04:23.71000:04:23.720 problem will be resolved and the scotch 00:04:25.42000:04:25.430 brite pads that I'm talking about they 00:04:27.70000:04:27.710 look like this pretty much dishwashing 00:04:30.27900:04:30.289 scrubby's you grab it the same way hold 00:04:33.61000:04:33.620 it really tight and shine it up but 00:04:37.65900:04:37.669 honestly once in a while I get calls 00:04:39.85000:04:39.860 where I forget my tool bag at home I go 00:04:41.65000:04:41.660 out there and if it's a flame sensor in 00:04:43.60000:04:43.610 a pinch I've cleaned flame sensors 00:04:45.79000:04:45.800 before with just the sleeve of my 00:04:47.35000:04:47.360 sweater and that works just as well 00:04:49.69000:04:49.700 might not last as long but it gets the 00:04:51.58000:04:51.590 job done but anyways I'm not gonna get 00:04:53.46900:04:53.479 stuck on the flame sensor for too long I 00:04:55.15000:04:55.160 have two big videos that dive deeper 00:04:57.90900:04:57.919 into this whole flame sensor issue so if 00:05:00.07000:05:00.080 you want to know more about the flame 00:05:01.39000:05:01.400 sensor how it works and all that stuff 00:05:02.95000:05:02.960 do 00:05:03.58000:05:03.590 go ahead and check out those videos but 00:05:05.20000:05:05.210 anyways this is the number one offender 00:05:07.09000:05:07.100 for furnace calls and there's some 00:05:08.92000:05:08.930 rumors going around that if you clean 00:05:10.42000:05:10.430 your flame sensor with a hundred dollar 00:05:12.16000:05:12.170 bill it'll last a hundred times longer I 00:05:14.26000:05:14.270 haven't tried that myself so I don't 00:05:15.70000:05:15.710 know but believe it if you may anyways 00:05:18.10000:05:18.110 moving on number two with 26 calls out 00:05:22.60000:05:22.610 of 315 a dirty furnace filter and your 00:05:26.65000:05:26.660 filter is generally gonna be on your 00:05:30.37000:05:30.380 return duct most people have it l-shaped 00:05:34.18000:05:34.190 like I do right here and your filter 00:05:36.10000:05:36.110 will be in the return duct right before 00:05:37.75000:05:37.760 the furnace and just so you know your 00:05:40.33000:05:40.340 filters are directional most of them 00:05:43.06000:05:43.070 will have an arrow on them right here 00:05:45.82000:05:45.830 that says which which way the air flows 00:05:48.61000:05:48.620 is the way you should put the filter in 00:05:50.35000:05:50.360 whatever side has a net on it see how 00:05:53.41000:05:53.420 this side doesn't have a net that wire 00:05:55.21000:05:55.220 net but this side does that's the site 00:05:57.94000:05:57.950 that goes towards the blower fan or 00:05:59.89000:05:59.900 towards the furnace and the reason for 00:06:02.92000:06:02.930 that is if for some reason somebody 00:06:05.20000:06:05.210 doesn't replace their filter for a long 00:06:06.85000:06:06.860 time it'll get really restricted and the 00:06:08.68000:06:08.690 fan will start to suck it in and I've 00:06:10.66000:06:10.670 seen that a couple times where the 00:06:11.86000:06:11.870 filter gets completely sucked in and 00:06:13.57000:06:13.580 wrapped around the motor shaft it's 00:06:15.88000:06:15.890 really hard to pry it off that's why one 00:06:18.10000:06:18.110 side of the filter has a net on it to 00:06:19.99000:06:20.000 prevent it from being sucked in so if 00:06:21.88000:06:21.890 you're like me and you forget to change 00:06:23.71000:06:23.720 your filter a lot what I started doing 00:06:26.35000:06:26.360 is just ordering my filters on Amazon I 00:06:28.81000:06:28.820 get a whole box of them I put the old 00:06:31.42000:06:31.430 ones right back into the box so after I 00:06:34.18000:06:34.190 use the filter you should be changing 00:06:35.74000:06:35.750 them really every month or two and 00:06:38.34000:06:38.350 having a box standing by your furnace 00:06:40.57000:06:40.580 kind of reminds you makes it easier to 00:06:42.34000:06:42.350 just swap them out and one last thing 00:06:44.11000:06:44.120 about the filters I promise this is the 00:06:45.70000:06:45.710 last thing I'm getting stuck on filters 00:06:47.14000:06:47.150 for a little too long here the best 00:06:49.45000:06:49.460 filters to buy the ones we generally 00:06:51.34000:06:51.350 recommend the fiberglass ones that are 00:06:53.17000:06:53.180 either blue or green you know you can 00:06:54.97000:06:54.980 see through them kinda those tend to let 00:06:57.19000:06:57.200 too much through then there's these 00:06:58.90000:06:58.910 premium filters where Gordian is just 00:07:01.12000:07:01.130 closely knit together they tend to be a 00:07:04.63000:07:04.640 little too restrictive and I have 00:07:06.28000:07:06.290 checked air pressure before of all the 00:07:08.29000:07:08.300 different filters and that really is 00:07:09.76000:07:09.770 true so the one we recommend is this 00:07:12.43000:07:12.440 medium grade pleated filter where the 00:07:14.11000:07:14.120 accordion is a little more spaced out 00:07:15.49000:07:15.500 these tend to catch them 00:07:17.44000:07:17.450 stuff and they're not as restrictive so 00:07:20.32000:07:20.330 I come to a customer's house and the 00:07:22.27000:07:22.280 general complaint would be my furnace 00:07:24.49000:07:24.500 seems to not be keeping up or I can see 00:07:27.82000:07:27.830 the burners come on for a couple minutes 00:07:29.35000:07:29.360 and turn off or maybe you know when it's 00:07:31.57000:07:31.580 colder outside my furnace isn't keeping 00:07:33.40000:07:33.410 up and generally that'll be because it's 00:07:35.53000:07:35.540 overheating and the furnace if you look 00:07:37.84000:07:37.850 right here has a high limit which 00:07:40.66000:07:40.670 generally will look like this sometimes 00:07:42.88000:07:42.890 it'll be a smaller switch but usually 00:07:45.19000:07:45.200 it's a big rectangle looking thing like 00:07:47.08000:07:47.090 that with two wires going to it that's a 00:07:49.45000:07:49.460 high limit and basically if the furnace 00:07:51.58000:07:51.590 inside is getting too hot because 00:07:53.65000:07:53.660 there's not enough air going through it 00:07:55.27000:07:55.280 then that high limit trips and it turns 00:07:58.03000:07:58.040 the burners off leaves the fan on cools 00:08:00.61000:08:00.620 itself off and then turns back on and 00:08:02.89000:08:02.900 repeats that cycle over and over and 00:08:04.57000:08:04.580 some furnaces have a lockout feature if 00:08:06.94000:08:06.950 it overheats three to five times in one 00:08:09.94000:08:09.950 heating cycle it'll go into a lockout 00:08:12.22000:08:12.230 for three hours or it'll just sit there 00:08:13.87000:08:13.880 and do nothing and then it'll restart 00:08:15.85000:08:15.860 and try again all right moving on to 00:08:18.28000:08:18.290 number three number three was a bad 00:08:20.71000:08:20.720 inducer motor so out of 315 calls 24 00:08:23.47000:08:23.480 were abandoned deucer motor and what 00:08:26.11000:08:26.120 that will look like many times the 00:08:27.91000:08:27.920 furnace isn't working at all you come 00:08:29.62000:08:29.630 down you take off the furnace door and 00:08:31.15000:08:31.160 if you put your hand on the inducer 00:08:32.77000:08:32.780 motor a lot of times it'll be scorching 00:08:35.11000:08:35.120 hot you like burn your hand you have to 00:08:37.21000:08:37.220 let go right away or there are times 00:08:39.31000:08:39.320 when it's not hot in those cases you 00:08:41.59000:08:41.600 want to check with your meter and see if 00:08:43.39000:08:43.400 it's actually getting 120 volts from the 00:08:45.28000:08:45.290 control board because sometimes it's 00:08:46.96000:08:46.970 actually the board that's bad and not 00:08:48.43000:08:48.440 the inducer motor where it's just not 00:08:50.53000:08:50.540 sending power to it but long story short 00:08:52.72000:08:52.730 if the inducer motor is getting a 00:08:54.85000:08:54.860 hundred twenty volts but it's not 00:08:56.26000:08:56.270 turning on the inducer motor is bad 00:08:58.78000:08:58.790 the only other scenario is if your motor 00:09:01.00000:09:01.010 has something stuck in it like a bird or 00:09:03.19000:09:03.200 a mouse or a bat or some bird nest or 00:09:06.13000:09:06.140 something like that and an easy way to 00:09:07.99000:09:08.000 check that is sometimes you'll have a 00:09:09.97000:09:09.980 cooling fan in front of your inducer 00:09:11.77000:09:11.780 motor or you have like in my case I do 00:09:15.01000:09:15.020 see my fan it's gonna be hard to see on 00:09:17.26000:09:17.270 the camera but there's a fan behind 00:09:19.30000:09:19.310 these grates you can try to stick like a 00:09:21.52000:09:21.530 little screwdriver in there and spin it 00:09:22.99000:09:23.000 and see if it's bent if it's spinning 00:09:25.63000:09:25.640 freely or rather freely I should say 00:09:27.70000:09:27.710 that means you probably don't have 00:09:29.38000:09:29.390 anything in there or anything stuck in 00:09:31.48000:09:31.490 and your inducer motor is just bad and 00:09:34.32900:09:34.339 of course the easy fix for that is to 00:09:37.09000:09:37.100 just replace the whole inducer motor 00:09:38.47000:09:38.480 usually they come as a little assembly 00:09:40.35900:09:40.369 which makes them pretty easy to replace 00:09:42.06900:09:42.079 moving on to fourth place and fourth 00:09:44.04900:09:44.059 place was a bad blower motor with 23 00:09:46.98900:09:46.999 calls and the blower motor is down here 00:09:49.73900:09:49.749 and up full furnace the blower motor is 00:09:52.98900:09:52.999 usually on the bottom section of the 00:09:54.85000:09:54.860 furnace and that's this thing right here 00:09:56.71000:09:56.720 this is the blower motor housing and if 00:09:59.04900:09:59.059 you reach in there's the blower motor 00:10:01.35900:10:01.369 there's the capacitor and right below it 00:10:03.69900:10:03.709 right here every blower motor will have 00:10:05.43900:10:05.449 a capacitor just that thing right there 00:10:08.57900:10:08.589 and if you reach in on the other side 00:10:11.61900:10:11.629 generally you can put your hand in there 00:10:13.90000:10:13.910 and spin the blower wheel or the 00:10:17.07900:10:17.089 squirrel cage by ham now if the blower 00:10:19.72000:10:19.730 motor is bad or seizing up you won't be 00:10:22.26900:10:22.279 able to freely spin that fan you'll feel 00:10:25.03000:10:25.040 that it's seized up where it's hard to 00:10:27.00900:10:27.019 spend another indicator is if you reach 00:10:28.98900:10:28.999 in there and touch that motor 00:10:30.34000:10:30.350 it'll be really hot most of the time and 00:10:32.53000:10:32.540 why those fail is a because your filter 00:10:36.81900:10:36.829 was dirty for a long time maybe there 00:10:38.43900:10:38.449 was just some kind of electrical surge 00:10:39.63900:10:39.649 many times the capacitor is dead that 00:10:42.78900:10:42.799 little capacitor that I pointed to 00:10:44.16900:10:44.179 earlier that kind of gives the fan of 00:10:46.56900:10:46.579 boost to get it spinning if that thing's 00:10:48.42900:10:48.439 completely dead your fan will have a 00:10:49.96000:10:49.970 really hard time turning on so generally 00:10:52.09000:10:52.100 I'll come to a house and the customer 00:10:53.47000:10:53.480 will tell me either the fan starts very 00:10:56.35000:10:56.360 sluggishly 00:10:57.16000:10:57.170 and then completely quits or they say 00:11:00.10000:11:00.110 they're smelling some kind of a burnt 00:11:01.80900:11:01.819 electrical smell in the house then 00:11:03.87900:11:03.889 almost guarantee that that blower motor 00:11:05.71000:11:05.720 is bad sometimes the whole wheel will be 00:11:08.73900:11:08.749 messed up to where it'll be just 00:11:10.56900:11:10.579 scraping the sides of that housing and 00:11:12.73000:11:12.740 of course the remedy for that is to 00:11:14.55900:11:14.569 replace the blower motor if the wheels 00:11:16.53900:11:16.549 bad replace the wheel and you always 00:11:18.40000:11:18.410 replace the capacitor as well and if 00:11:20.47000:11:20.480 that's the problem you're experiencing 00:11:21.87900:11:21.889 at your house I do have a video where I 00:11:24.06900:11:24.079 replaced my motor and I filmed the whole 00:11:25.90000:11:25.910 thing so if you need to help with 00:11:27.22000:11:27.230 replacing your blower motor do check 00:11:29.43900:11:29.449 that video out and coming in at fifth 00:11:31.44900:11:31.459 place is a bad control board and the 00:11:34.41900:11:34.429 control board is generally going to be 00:11:36.32900:11:36.339 right in front of the blower housing my 00:11:39.24900:11:39.259 control board is right here they look 00:11:41.67900:11:41.689 differently on various furnaces older 00:11:43.99000:11:44.000 furnaces will not have control boards 00:11:45.61000:11:45.620 they'll just have a few relays but most 00:11:47.71000:11:47.720 furnaces will have a board that looks 00:11:49.39000:11:49.400 similar to this and once in a while they 00:11:51.91000:11:51.920 will be up in the top section but 00:11:54.64000:11:54.650 generally they're here and what happens 00:11:56.71000:11:56.720 is you know customer will call us and 00:11:58.36000:11:58.370 tell us hey either my furnace is not 00:11:59.89000:11:59.900 working at all or just doing something 00:12:01.39000:12:01.400 weird like the fan will not turn off no 00:12:04.36000:12:04.370 matter what I do I would have to turn 00:12:06.19000:12:06.200 the whole furnace switch off just to 00:12:07.78000:12:07.790 turn the blower fan off just constantly 00:12:09.82000:12:09.830 running sometimes it'll do something 00:12:12.01000:12:12.020 weird like turn on the a/c as it's 00:12:13.99000:12:14.000 running the furnace or is simply not 00:12:16.00000:12:16.010 sending power to something and a lot of 00:12:17.89000:12:17.900 times when you take the board off and 00:12:19.24000:12:19.250 look on the other side of it you'll see 00:12:20.95000:12:20.960 some burn marks on it and of course 00:12:22.57000:12:22.580 that's a dead giveaway that the board is 00:12:24.40000:12:24.410 bad and I also have a video on how to 00:12:26.59000:12:26.600 troubleshoot a control board as well so 00:12:28.66000:12:28.670 if you think your problem is the control 00:12:30.25000:12:30.260 board you can go ahead and check that 00:12:31.75000:12:31.760 video out and that way we won't have to 00:12:33.76000:12:33.770 spend any more time on the control board 00:12:35.62000:12:35.630 and coming in in sixth place 00:12:37.24000:12:37.250 with 15 calls each we have a two-way tie 00:12:39.76000:12:39.770 the first one is a bad gas valve the gas 00:12:42.85000:12:42.860 valve is right here generally it will be 00:12:44.74000:12:44.750 in the upper section of the furnace 00:12:46.12000:12:46.130 above the burners sometimes it'll be 00:12:48.19000:12:48.200 below but basically if your gas valve is 00:12:51.52000:12:51.530 getting power yeah it's not opening then 00:12:53.89000:12:53.900 that just means that the solenoid on the 00:12:55.87000:12:55.880 gas valve is bad and generally you can't 00:12:58.03000:12:58.040 just replace the coil on it you have to 00:13:00.04000:13:00.050 replace the whole gas valve and what 00:13:01.87000:13:01.880 that would look like is the furnace will 00:13:03.94000:13:03.950 start up normally where you're inducer 00:13:06.25000:13:06.260 motor will start your pressure switches 00:13:07.81000:13:07.820 will close you'll see your igniter 00:13:09.55000:13:09.560 glowing and that's it nothing else 00:13:12.34000:13:12.350 happens it just glows and then shuts off 00:13:14.68000:13:14.690 and I have seen thank you for where 00:13:16.39000:13:16.400 customers will accidentally turn off the 00:13:18.70000:13:18.710 gas to the furnace and they thought 00:13:21.10000:13:21.110 they're turning it off to something else 00:13:22.75000:13:22.760 like a water heater or maybe a garage 00:13:24.46000:13:24.470 heater they turn it off and that will 00:13:26.59000:13:26.600 give you similar results where you know 00:13:28.93000:13:28.940 the igniter will glow but in that 00:13:30.57900:13:30.589 instance you actually hear the gas film 00:13:32.86000:13:32.870 opening it'll be like a click click but 00:13:35.47000:13:35.480 no gas comes out in that case your 00:13:37.90000:13:37.910 furnace is simply just not getting gas 00:13:39.67000:13:39.680 so if you're experiencing that problem 00:13:41.47000:13:41.480 then yes you just need to replace the 00:13:43.45000:13:43.460 whole gas valve and the other one in 6th 00:13:45.57900:13:45.589 place is a bad heat exchanger now when I 00:13:48.40000:13:48.410 say bad heat exchanger I'm talking about 00:13:49.87000:13:49.880 both the primary heat exchanger which is 00:13:52.27000:13:52.280 behind all of this or behind the wall of 00:13:55.18000:13:55.190 the furnace here that's the main 00:13:56.53000:13:56.540 component of the fern 00:13:57.50000:13:57.510 and high-efficiency furnaces an easy way 00:14:00.56000:14:00.570 to tell if you have a high-efficiency 00:14:01.43000:14:01.440 furnace is if you have PVC venting so if 00:14:04.22000:14:04.230 you have plastic pipes coming out of 00:14:05.99000:14:06.000 your furnace instead of a steel one like 00:14:08.06000:14:08.070 mine that means you have a 00:14:09.95000:14:09.960 high-efficiency furnace mine is not 00:14:12.05000:14:12.060 high-efficiency it's just an 80% furnace 00:14:13.97000:14:13.980 so it has just one heat exchanger the 00:14:16.22000:14:16.230 primary heat exchanger and those high 00:14:17.90000:14:17.910 efficiencies they have - they have the 00:14:19.43000:14:19.440 primary and the secondary which creates 00:14:21.74000:14:21.750 water or condensation so what is a heat 00:14:24.32000:14:24.330 exchanger and why is it so important the 00:14:26.57000:14:26.580 heat exchanger is the main component of 00:14:28.31000:14:28.320 the furnace and that is basically the 00:14:30.53000:14:30.540 thing that separates your house air from 00:14:32.84000:14:32.850 the combustion fumes that are going out 00:14:34.34000:14:34.350 your chimney usually it's a tubular 00:14:36.53000:14:36.540 looking thing it kind of snakes back and 00:14:38.87000:14:38.880 forth they do it that way so that the 00:14:40.94000:14:40.950 heat stays in there longer so it's not 00:14:43.28000:14:43.290 just going straight up and out that way 00:14:45.05000:14:45.060 you're losing a lot of efficiency or 00:14:46.88000:14:46.890 sometimes it'll be split up into cells 00:14:48.77000:14:48.780 and those cells are tubes with time they 00:14:52.07000:14:52.080 will crack and although they are 00:14:53.99000:14:54.000 designed to last as long as the average 00:14:55.70000:14:55.710 life of the furnace which is about 15 00:14:57.77000:14:57.780 years there are circumstances that can 00:15:00.14000:15:00.150 kill them a lot faster so for example 00:15:02.36000:15:02.370 that dirty filter that we talked about 00:15:04.43000:15:04.440 earlier if your furnace is constantly 00:15:06.26000:15:06.270 overheating that will kill your heat 00:15:08.75000:15:08.760 exchanger a lot faster or a plug day 00:15:11.27000:15:11.280 coil or bad ductwork or maybe your 00:15:13.91000:15:13.920 furnace was installed poorly to begin 00:15:15.59000:15:15.600 with that can all decrease the lifetime 00:15:17.45000:15:17.460 of a furnace I've condemned furnaces 00:15:19.31000:15:19.320 before that were only six or eight years 00:15:21.17000:15:21.180 old so what this would look like a lot 00:15:22.82000:15:22.830 of times the customer will call us 00:15:24.17000:15:24.180 because the furnace is simply not 00:15:26.54000:15:26.550 working or something's not right or 00:15:28.85000:15:28.860 something smells outside by the exhaust 00:15:31.19000:15:31.200 fumes differently a lot of times I'll 00:15:33.44000:15:33.450 come and I'll see that flame rollout 00:15:35.75000:15:35.760 switches which in my case are right here 00:15:37.91000:15:37.920 and different furnaces are in different 00:15:39.74000:15:39.750 spots but these flame roll-ups are 00:15:41.87000:15:41.880 manual reset switches they have a little 00:15:44.87000:15:44.880 button on them if you're a flame rollout 00:15:47.48000:15:47.490 switch is tripped that means that your 00:15:51.40000:15:51.410 burner chamber right here was getting 00:15:53.42000:15:53.430 too hot or sometimes the flames 00:15:55.64000:15:55.650 literally roll out backwards and you can 00:15:57.71000:15:57.720 see them just coming back out and that's 00:16:00.23000:16:00.240 what these switches are here for if it's 00:16:02.06000:16:02.070 getting too hot they will trip and one 00:16:04.01000:16:04.020 way we can tell if the heat exchanger is 00:16:05.57000:16:05.580 bad or not is by putting a combustion 00:16:09.08000:16:09.090 analyzer probe into the chip 00:16:10.81000:16:10.820 or into your exhaust pipe and seeing how 00:16:13.81000:16:13.820 much carbon monoxide is going out your 00:16:15.46000:16:15.470 chimney it should be generally under a 00:16:17.92000:16:17.930 hundred parts per million and a normally 00:16:19.69000:16:19.700 operating furnace generally if you have 00:16:21.97000:16:21.980 a bad furnace or a bad heat exchanger 00:16:24.31000:16:24.320 your carbon monoxide parts-per-million 00:16:26.17000:16:26.180 will go through the roof they'll be like 00:16:28.03000:16:28.040 2,000 3,000 4,000 and then you want to 00:16:30.88000:16:30.890 pull out your probe right away otherwise 00:16:32.41000:16:32.420 it'll peg your meter if the carbon 00:16:34.45000:16:34.460 monoxide going out the chimney is that 00:16:35.98000:16:35.990 high then generally you are having a 00:16:38.47000:16:38.480 problem with your heat exchanger and 00:16:39.85000:16:39.860 then if we want to visually verify if 00:16:42.28000:16:42.290 it's bad or not sometimes you can pull 00:16:44.05000:16:44.060 the blower motor out if you have about 00:16:45.88000:16:45.890 80% furnace you can pull the whole thing 00:16:47.77000:16:47.780 out get under there and look at it from 00:16:50.32000:16:50.330 the bottom where you see the whole heat 00:16:52.09000:16:52.100 exchanger and try to find a crack or to 00:16:54.58000:16:54.590 see where it's cracked that way 00:16:56.17000:16:56.180 or you can take out that high limit and 00:16:58.06000:16:58.070 if you have a inspection camera or 00:17:00.07000:17:00.080 endoscope for your phone you can also 00:17:02.41000:17:02.420 snake in there and try to see where the 00:17:04.15000:17:04.160 cracks are long story short the American 00:17:06.70000:17:06.710 Gas Association states that by code if 00:17:09.79000:17:09.800 there is a crack or a hole in your heat 00:17:12.07000:17:12.080 exchanger the heat exchanger or the 00:17:14.35000:17:14.360 whole furnace must be replaced and the 00:17:16.78000:17:16.790 reason that's so important is because 00:17:18.21000:17:18.220 the heat exchanger is the thing that 00:17:20.26000:17:20.270 keeps all the combustion fumes out of 00:17:22.39000:17:22.400 your house supply air so if that thing 00:17:24.28000:17:24.290 has a crack or a hole in it and it's 00:17:25.60000:17:25.610 producing that much carbon monoxide and 00:17:27.61000:17:27.620 somehow that carbon monoxide leaks out 00:17:29.74000:17:29.750 into your air supply especially at night 00:17:31.72000:17:31.730 when everybody's sleeping it will only 00:17:33.76000:17:33.770 take minutes to kill everybody in the 00:17:35.53000:17:35.540 house including the dog but anyway 00:17:37.57000:17:37.580 enough about the heat exchanger moving 00:17:39.22000:17:39.230 on in seventh place we also have a 00:17:41.05000:17:41.060 two-way tie with 11 calls each the first 00:17:43.84000:17:43.850 one is a bad igniter their igniter is 00:17:46.45000:17:46.460 right here in mine it's on the right 00:17:50.11000:17:50.120 side usually I'll have a plug like this 00:17:52.78000:17:52.790 a little molex plug that you can unplug 00:17:55.54000:17:55.550 what that would look like is the 00:17:57.91000:17:57.920 customer says the furnace turns on it 00:18:00.16000:18:00.170 seems to start working but it never 00:18:02.14000:18:02.150 actually lights so I come down to the 00:18:04.15000:18:04.160 basement 00:18:04.57000:18:04.580 I turned the furnace switch off turn it 00:18:06.67000:18:06.680 back on and I see what it does so you'll 00:18:09.70000:18:09.710 see the inducer motor come on after a 00:18:11.80000:18:11.810 while generally you will hear the gas 00:18:13.60000:18:13.610 valve open and a little bit of gas will 00:18:15.91000:18:15.920 come out but the igniter was never 00:18:17.95000:18:17.960 glowing most of the time that means your 00:18:20.41000:18:20.420 igniter is bad and if you want to check 00:18:22.24000:18:22.250 it with the meter you can put your leads 00:18:24.81000:18:24.820 into the plug in the metal parts one 00:18:28.23000:18:28.240 lead-in here and one leading here if the 00:18:30.93000:18:30.940 igniter is getting a hundred twenty 00:18:32.46000:18:32.470 volts but it's not glowing then you know 00:18:34.71000:18:34.720 you have a bad igniter or you can turn 00:18:36.48000:18:36.490 the power off to your furnace unplug 00:18:39.06000:18:39.070 your igniter and then set your meter to 00:18:40.95000:18:40.960 resistance and put both leads into both 00:18:43.32000:18:43.330 plugs and if you have o L that means the 00:18:46.53000:18:46.540 igniter is bad as well and once you 00:18:48.54000:18:48.550 replace it your furnace should fire 00:18:50.07000:18:50.080 right back up and the other one in seven 00:18:52.02000:18:52.030 place with eleven calls is a plugged a 00:18:54.60000:18:54.610 coil so it'll be a similar scenario 00:18:56.67000:18:56.680 where the furnace is overheating and 00:18:58.32000:18:58.330 tripping on that high limit and the a 00:19:01.05000:19:01.060 coil or the evaporator coil as part of 00:19:03.00000:19:03.010 the air conditioner and if you have an 00:19:04.68000:19:04.690 up flow furnace generally it'll be 00:19:06.72000:19:06.730 sitting on top of your furnace and 00:19:08.97000:19:08.980 you'll see these refrigerant i p-- scum 00:19:10.44000:19:10.450 into it along with the drain line on the 00:19:13.29000:19:13.300 bottom here and this coil it looks like 00:19:16.92000:19:16.930 a radiator almost like the unit you have 00:19:19.05000:19:19.060 standing outside your air conditioner 00:19:20.94000:19:20.950 you know how it gets plugged up with 00:19:22.05000:19:22.060 time as a sucking air on the sides so 00:19:24.51000:19:24.520 same thing happens with that one after a 00:19:26.25000:19:26.260 while especially if you're not very good 00:19:28.05000:19:28.060 at changing your furnace filters or if 00:19:30.45000:19:30.460 you have a filter that lets a lot 00:19:32.04000:19:32.050 through after a while all the dust and 00:19:34.65000:19:34.660 debris that gets past the filter will 00:19:36.75000:19:36.760 settle on to underside of that a coil 00:19:39.03000:19:39.040 and plug it up causing a restriction in 00:19:41.16000:19:41.170 the air flow so a lot of heat starts to 00:19:43.14000:19:43.150 build up in here because it can't get 00:19:44.61000:19:44.620 out and that of course will trip your 00:19:46.62000:19:46.630 high limit once it gets too hot the 00:19:48.27000:19:48.280 company I work for we don't do a coil 00:19:50.61000:19:50.620 cleaning unless they're very easy to 00:19:52.26000:19:52.270 access a lot of them aren't very easily 00:19:54.36000:19:54.370 accessible so we just recommend that 00:19:56.82000:19:56.830 people hire some duct cleaners to come 00:19:59.25000:19:59.260 out and clean that underside of their a 00:20:00.84000:20:00.850 coil but it is possible to clean it 00:20:02.85000:20:02.860 yourself just search on youtube how to 00:20:04.89000:20:04.900 clean your evaporator coil or a coil and 00:20:07.50000:20:07.510 I'm sure you'll find some videos of 00:20:09.42000:20:09.430 people cleaning their a coils and you'll 00:20:11.52000:20:11.530 see what that entails and moving on in 00:20:14.10000:20:14.110 eighth place with nine calls we have a 00:20:17.37000:20:17.380 bad ignition module and a bad ignition 00:20:20.13000:20:20.140 module is basically a control board but 00:20:23.13000:20:23.140 the difference between a control board 00:20:24.39000:20:24.400 like this and an ignition module or 00:20:26.76000:20:26.770 ignition control is that the ignition 00:20:29.58000:20:29.590 module is only for the ignition so it 00:20:31.98000:20:31.990 only controls the gas valve the spark if 00:20:34.29000:20:34.300 you have a spark igniter and the flame 00:20:36.27000:20:36.280 sensor 00:20:36.93000:20:36.940 whereas this control board it can 00:20:38.58000:20:38.590 trolls both the gas part and the fan 00:20:40.95000:20:40.960 which is why sometimes it's called the 00:20:42.72000:20:42.730 IFC which stands for integrated furnace 00:20:45.18000:20:45.190 control but anyway is that ignition 00:20:46.98000:20:46.990 module a lot of times I'll come out and 00:20:48.89900:20:48.909 what it'll be doing is if it's a spark 00:20:51.60000:20:51.610 igniter for some reason it won't be 00:20:53.43000:20:53.440 sending the spark to the igniter or 00:20:55.32000:20:55.330 maybe it's not sending power to the gas 00:20:57.53900:20:57.549 valve and of course to check that you 00:20:59.70000:20:59.710 would have to test it with your meter I 00:21:01.47000:21:01.480 don't have an ignition module in my 00:21:02.82000:21:02.830 furnace so I can't show you but 00:21:04.47000:21:04.480 basically you would just check with your 00:21:06.24000:21:06.250 meter to see if it's sending power to 00:21:07.83000:21:07.840 the gas valve or if it's sending power 00:21:09.69000:21:09.700 to the spark and if it's not the 00:21:11.58000:21:11.590 Magnusson module is bad and needs to be 00:21:13.32000:21:13.330 replaced and in 9th place we have a 00:21:15.29900:21:15.309 two-way tie with eight orders each the 00:21:18.18000:21:18.190 first one is a bad thermostat and a lot 00:21:20.07000:21:20.080 of times what that will look like is on 00:21:22.38000:21:22.390 a thermostat you know you turn on your 00:21:23.61000:21:23.620 heat or your furnace or even your fan 00:21:25.62000:21:25.630 and nothing happens or maybe just one of 00:21:27.81000:21:27.820 them is not working yet if you take the 00:21:29.63900:21:29.649 thermostat off the wall and jumper r2w 00:21:32.15900:21:32.169 which is basically jump ring the heat 00:21:34.32000:21:34.330 call then the furnace turns on and 00:21:36.21000:21:36.220 everything works good in that case you 00:21:38.15900:21:38.169 know that just the thermostat is bad and 00:21:39.93000:21:39.940 nothing's wrong with the furnace itself 00:21:41.39900:21:41.409 and in my furnace playlist I have two 00:21:43.47000:21:43.480 videos on how to bypass the thermostat 00:21:45.51000:21:45.520 just for that reason to see if it's bad 00:21:47.54900:21:47.559 or not I have a video of how to bypass 00:21:49.56000:21:49.570 the thermostat at the thermostat itself 00:21:51.41900:21:51.429 and then I have a video of how to bypass 00:21:53.13000:21:53.140 the thermostat at the control board so 00:21:55.76900:21:55.779 if you think your thermostat is bad you 00:21:57.33000:21:57.340 can check out those videos and go from 00:21:58.86000:21:58.870 there and the other one in 9th place is 00:22:00.69000:22:00.700 a dirty pilot assembly and of course I 00:22:03.65900:22:03.669 don't have this on my furnace because 00:22:04.95000:22:04.960 mine is a hot surface igniter but what 00:22:07.38000:22:07.390 that is is intermittent pilot system 00:22:10.01900:22:10.029 it'll have a little pilot hood a spark 00:22:13.71000:22:13.720 igniter generally and a flame sensor so 00:22:17.54900:22:17.559 what happens is it'll have a silver tube 00:22:19.52900:22:19.539 coming out of the gas valve which is the 00:22:21.12000:22:21.130 pilot tube that pilot tube opens up 00:22:24.12000:22:24.130 first let sound gas into the pilot to 00:22:27.06000:22:27.070 light that pilot intermittently or 00:22:28.79900:22:28.809 basically when there's a call for heat 00:22:30.65900:22:30.669 so that little pilot lights and once the 00:22:33.14900:22:33.159 flame sensor proves that there's a 00:22:34.50000:22:34.510 little flame there then that will tell 00:22:37.23000:22:37.240 the gas valve to open up and light all 00:22:39.29900:22:39.309 the burners and what happens is that 00:22:41.43000:22:41.440 little pilot tube that goes to the pilot 00:22:43.98000:22:43.990 hood there's a little orifice in there 00:22:45.77900:22:45.789 which is really tiny 00:22:47.37000:22:47.380 that little orphis if there's some gunk 00:22:49.52900:22:49.539 that falls on it maybe some scaling or 00:22:51.63000:22:51.640 some 00:22:52.11000:22:52.120 or dust or any kind of debris that 00:22:54.36000:22:54.370 little hole is very small if some stuff 00:22:56.70000:22:56.710 falls on that little pilot orifice that 00:22:58.95000:22:58.960 will plug it up and your pilot flame 00:23:01.40900:23:01.419 will not be hitting that flame sensor as 00:23:03.51000:23:03.520 well as it should be or maybe your pilot 00:23:05.54900:23:05.559 will be really lazy looking the pilot 00:23:08.58000:23:08.590 usually is basically two sharp flames if 00:23:11.82000:23:11.830 you see your pilot just going straight 00:23:13.35000:23:13.360 up that means something's going on and 00:23:15.72000:23:15.730 most likely that pilot orifice is dirty 00:23:17.76000:23:17.770 so all you got to do is take that whole 00:23:20.46000:23:20.470 thing out sometimes you can get away 00:23:22.62000:23:22.630 with just taking it out from the bottom 00:23:24.14900:23:24.159 and then being careful and how you bend 00:23:26.37000:23:26.380 that tube so you don't kink it just get 00:23:28.74000:23:28.750 it out far enough where you can take 00:23:30.00000:23:30.010 apart that pilot assembly to get to that 00:23:32.31000:23:32.320 orifice other times you have to take off 00:23:34.44000:23:34.450 the knot here and here just take the 00:23:36.09000:23:36.100 whole thing out and get to the orifice 00:23:37.91900:23:37.929 and clean it out I generally use just a 00:23:41.22000:23:41.230 little piece of my bass brass brush just 00:23:44.01000:23:44.020 one hair to get into that little orifice 00:23:46.98000:23:46.990 and clean it up and then you put 00:23:48.41900:23:48.429 everything back together and everything 00:23:49.95000:23:49.960 works once again and last but not least 00:23:52.44000:23:52.450 in 10th place coming in with seven calls 00:23:54.75000:23:54.760 we have a plugged condensate trap and a 00:23:57.63000:23:57.640 lot of times that will be a carrier with 00:23:59.82000:23:59.830 that white trap but there are other ones 00:24:02.39900:24:02.409 that get plugged up as well 00:24:03.89900:24:03.909 so if you have a carrier or a Bryant 00:24:06.02900:24:06.039 furnace and you see a white trap on it 00:24:08.27900:24:08.289 in those cases your furnace will be 00:24:09.99000:24:10.000 blinking a pressure code error if you 00:24:12.38900:24:12.399 take off the thick hose from that trap 00:24:14.99000:24:15.000 if that's the problem you're having 00:24:17.19000:24:17.200 generally there will be a ton of water 00:24:19.01900:24:19.029 that comes out of that hose so if you 00:24:21.24000:24:21.250 take that hose off and a lot of water 00:24:22.50000:24:22.510 comes rushing out that means your trap 00:24:24.60000:24:24.610 is probably plugged up so unhook all the 00:24:27.26900:24:27.279 hoses and the one from the bottom as 00:24:29.25000:24:29.260 well take that trap out and then flush 00:24:31.40900:24:31.419 it with hot water and close all the 00:24:33.45000:24:33.460 holes and just shake it vigorously flush 00:24:36.36000:24:36.370 it out fill it up again shake it 00:24:38.63900:24:38.649 vigorously until you can pour water into 00:24:41.31000:24:41.320 each of the holes on top the three holes 00:24:43.16900:24:43.179 and see water coming out the other end 00:24:44.76000:24:44.770 but once you clean that kind of a trap 00:24:46.74000:24:46.750 up real good that will take care of your 00:24:48.77900:24:48.789 pressure switch problem which is caused 00:24:50.31000:24:50.320 by that plugged up condensate trap which 00:24:53.19000:24:53.200 is causing water to back up in your 00:24:54.65900:24:54.669 collector box and your pressure switch 00:24:56.63900:24:56.649 hole is generally hooks up right to that 00:24:58.28900:24:58.299 collector box so if it senses that 00:25:00.12000:25:00.130 there's water in there it'll shut the 00:25:02.27900:25:02.289 furnace off 00:25:04.13000:25:04.140 and unfortunately all good things come 00:25:06.59000:25:06.600 to an end that was all for my top ten 00:25:09.20000:25:09.210 furnace problems but that was only about 00:25:11.69000:25:11.700 a third of all the stuff that I wrote 00:25:13.25000:25:13.260 down so let's not let all my efforts go 00:25:15.89000:25:15.900 to waste and go through the rest of the 00:25:18.32000:25:18.330 list as honorable mentions coming in 00:25:21.02000:25:21.030 with six calls as a high limit that's 00:25:22.64000:25:22.650 stuck open and what that would look like 00:25:24.47000:25:24.480 is I'll come to somebody's house and 00:25:26.15000:25:26.160 their blower fan is just constantly on 00:25:28.70000:25:28.710 and nothing else works a lot of times 00:25:31.22000:25:31.230 the the control board will be blinking 00:25:33.29000:25:33.300 an error code as well that will say 00:25:35.33000:25:35.340 circuit lockout or limit lockout and 00:25:37.37000:25:37.380 what happens sometimes is if you have a 00:25:39.08000:25:39.090 dirty filter for a while and your limit 00:25:41.15000:25:41.160 keeps tripping over and over and over 00:25:42.77000:25:42.780 again that limit switch it's made out of 00:25:44.96000:25:44.970 two different metals and when they heat 00:25:46.88000:25:46.890 up one of them warps and disconnects 00:25:48.80000:25:48.810 which interrupts the circuit and if that 00:25:50.96000:25:50.970 keeps happening over and over and over 00:25:52.43000:25:52.440 again sometimes that's which will get 00:25:54.02000:25:54.030 stuck open and what you can do which 00:25:56.24000:25:56.250 almost works every time is take a 00:25:58.19000:25:58.200 screwdriver or a nut driver and just 00:26:00.59000:26:00.600 give your high limit switch just a good 00:26:02.96000:26:02.970 few knocks and a lot of times that will 00:26:06.23000:26:06.240 be enough to free it up if that doesn't 00:26:08.09000:26:08.100 free it up you can try to take the 00:26:09.26000:26:09.270 screws out take the limit out and just 00:26:11.42000:26:11.430 knock it against the cabinet or the 00:26:12.86000:26:12.870 floor and that should free it up if 00:26:14.96000:26:14.970 nothing frees it up well then you just 00:26:17.03000:26:17.040 have to replace the limit and if you 00:26:18.47000:26:18.480 want to check your limit with a 00:26:19.76000:26:19.770 voltmeter as your furnace is running you 00:26:21.95000:26:21.960 can put both leads on both terminals on 00:26:24.26000:26:24.270 the limit and you should have zero volts 00:26:26.72000:26:26.730 if the switch is closed if you have 27 00:26:29.42000:26:29.430 volts that means the switch is open and 00:26:31.28000:26:31.290 coming in with five calls we have a bad 00:26:33.20000:26:33.210 pressure switch I have two of them in 00:26:35.21000:26:35.220 mine and sometimes once again similar to 00:26:37.73000:26:37.740 the high limit the pressure switches can 00:26:39.80000:26:39.810 get stuck in either a closed or an open 00:26:41.99000:26:42.000 position and if it's stuck in any of 00:26:43.94000:26:43.950 those positions your furnace will not 00:26:45.47000:26:45.480 work 00:26:45.95000:26:45.960 unfortunately taking these things off 00:26:47.63000:26:47.640 and hitting them you will not do you any 00:26:49.40000:26:49.410 good 00:26:49.76000:26:49.770 you could try to take the little 00:26:51.32000:26:51.330 pressure switch hose off and gently blow 00:26:53.93000:26:53.940 through it or suck on it to try to 00:26:55.82000:26:55.830 exercise that diaphragm and if it's 00:26:57.83000:26:57.840 stuck sometimes it will free it up and 00:26:59.69000:26:59.700 if that works for you great if not well 00:27:02.15000:27:02.160 then you just have to replace that 00:27:03.26000:27:03.270 pressure switch 00:27:04.28000:27:04.290 I had three calls of a damaged or noisy 00:27:06.68000:27:06.690 blower wheel and those calls the blower 00:27:09.02000:27:09.030 motor would still be working but it'll 00:27:11.06000:27:11.070 just be making a lot of racket either 00:27:12.80000:27:12.810 the blower wheel was out of balance or 00:27:14.78000:27:14.790 some of the fins were broken off so it 00:27:16.67000:27:16.680 was just a scrape 00:27:17.66000:27:17.670 against the sides of it just making a 00:27:19.19000:27:19.200 lot of noise in that case I usually 00:27:21.32000:27:21.330 replace the blower motor and the wheel 00:27:23.27000:27:23.280 and the capacitor just the whole set to 00:27:25.64000:27:25.650 get a done work I had one call where I 00:27:27.68000:27:27.690 had a bad 3 wire pilot some older 00:27:30.26000:27:30.270 furnaces have those where instead of a 00:27:31.88000:27:31.890 flame sensor it'll just be like a big 00:27:33.41000:27:33.420 bar not a lot of them out there left but 00:27:36.14000:27:36.150 on a three wire pilot it's not a flame 00:27:38.21000:27:38.220 sensor that you can clean so if it's not 00:27:40.10000:27:40.110 sensing the flame for some reason then 00:27:41.66000:27:41.670 you just have to replace that whole 00:27:42.80000:27:42.810 assembly 00:27:43.61000:27:43.620 I had to blowing three amp fuses which 00:27:46.16000:27:46.170 is generally going to be on your control 00:27:47.54000:27:47.550 board somewhere or in my case it's just 00:27:50.33000:27:50.340 on these two wires in series with the 00:27:52.31000:27:52.320 secondary side of the transformer and as 00:27:54.53000:27:54.540 far as I can remember one of those was a 00:27:56.12000:27:56.130 barre thermostat wire I think it was 00:27:58.01000:27:58.020 either too har or 2w and it was touching 00:28:00.35000:28:00.360 the door of the furnace and I was 00:28:02.15000:28:02.160 shorting it out and for the other one I 00:28:04.07000:28:04.080 remember replacing the fuse and I 00:28:05.63000:28:05.640 couldn't find anything wrong so I just 00:28:07.52000:28:07.530 ran the furnace for like 20 minutes and 00:28:09.14000:28:09.150 it was working great I called it a day 00:28:10.76000:28:10.770 told the guy to call me if anything else 00:28:12.32000:28:12.330 comes up but anyways if your three apt 00:28:14.21000:28:14.220 fuse is popping while you're running 00:28:16.43000:28:16.440 your furnace the first thing you want to 00:28:18.08000:28:18.090 do is look for any bear 24 volt wires or 00:28:21.38000:28:21.390 basically the thermostat wires I also 00:28:23.63000:28:23.640 had one call where the furnace breaker 00:28:25.19000:28:25.200 was tripped and I couldn't figure out 00:28:26.51000:28:26.520 why 00:28:27.08000:28:27.090 once again I reset the breaker I checked 00:28:29.09000:28:29.100 everything all the amp drawers 00:28:30.44000:28:30.450 there's no bare wires found nothing 00:28:32.36000:28:32.370 wrong once again ran the furnace for 00:28:34.28000:28:34.290 like 20 minutes and everything was 00:28:35.84000:28:35.850 working great so I was thinking maybe 00:28:37.73000:28:37.740 something was wrong with the breaker 00:28:39.02000:28:39.030 itself because the furnace I wasn't 00:28:41.36000:28:41.370 finding anything but anyways reset that 00:28:43.16000:28:43.170 breaker and it's been working I never 00:28:45.23000:28:45.240 got called back to that one and coming 00:28:46.73000:28:46.740 in with three calls 00:28:47.78000:28:47.790 I had a leaking collector box my furnace 00:28:50.51000:28:50.520 doesn't even have a collector box only 00:28:52.34000:28:52.350 high efficiency furnaces will have a 00:28:53.99000:28:54.000 collector box once again the high 00:28:56.30000:28:56.310 efficiency furnace is the one with the 00:28:57.68000:28:57.690 PVC venting the two plastic pipes coming 00:29:00.17000:29:00.180 out generally two sometimes it'll be 00:29:01.76000:29:01.770 just one but on high efficiency furnaces 00:29:04.88000:29:04.890 behind your inducer motor there's also 00:29:07.04000:29:07.050 going to be a collector box so if water 00:29:09.53000:29:09.540 for some reason is backing up in your 00:29:11.33000:29:11.340 condensate line the water that's backing 00:29:14.12000:29:14.130 up will go into that collector box until 00:29:15.80000:29:15.810 it trips a pressure switch because the 00:29:18.08000:29:18.090 pressure switch is connected to the 00:29:19.31000:29:19.320 collector box so if the water level gets 00:29:21.11000:29:21.120 up to the level where the pressure 00:29:23.06000:29:23.070 switch hose connects that will shut off 00:29:25.13000:29:25.140 your furnace but anyways I had three of 00:29:27.20000:29:27.210 those boxes that were leaking and 00:29:28.82000:29:28.830 there's not much it could do for that 00:29:30.68000:29:30.690 you could 00:29:31.28000:29:31.290 try to silicone it that doesn't work too 00:29:33.29000:29:33.300 well the recommended fix for that is to 00:29:35.45000:29:35.460 just replace that collector box I had 00:29:37.46000:29:37.470 for calls where the customer told me hey 00:29:39.14000:29:39.150 my furnace is not working at all 00:29:40.79000:29:40.800 I come out to that house and all it is 00:29:42.44000:29:42.450 is just dead thermostat batteries so I 00:29:45.32000:29:45.330 replaced the batteries and everything 00:29:46.58000:29:46.590 fires right back up 00:29:47.96000:29:47.970 I had one gas valve that was leaking 00:29:49.70000:29:49.710 through which means that for some reason 00:29:52.28000:29:52.290 when the heat call would be over the gas 00:29:54.29000:29:54.300 valve wouldn't close all the way and 00:29:55.91000:29:55.920 there would be some gas still coming 00:29:57.71000:29:57.720 through and there's really nothing you 00:29:59.27000:29:59.280 could do for that except just replace 00:30:01.22000:30:01.230 the whole gas valve 00:30:02.27000:30:02.280 I had one call that was a burnt rodent 00:30:04.46000:30:04.470 smell so a customer called us because he 00:30:06.53000:30:06.540 was smelling of burnt rodent smelled 00:30:07.91000:30:07.920 that he thought was coming from the 00:30:09.05000:30:09.060 furnace so I came out I checked 00:30:11.12000:30:11.130 everything out you can check my carbon 00:30:13.04000:30:13.050 monoxide readings in the flue checked my 00:30:15.38000:30:15.390 amp drawers my motors checked the 00:30:17.54000:30:17.550 ductwork all around the filter found 00:30:19.88000:30:19.890 nothing wrong I told the guy hey your 00:30:21.65000:30:21.660 furnace is working great this smell is 00:30:23.87000:30:23.880 not coming from the furnace or the 00:30:25.49000:30:25.500 ductwork and I just so happened to come 00:30:27.56000:30:27.570 back to that house for a dryer maybe 00:30:29.69000:30:29.700 like four months later and I asked him 00:30:31.58000:30:31.590 hey is your furnace still smelling like 00:30:33.08000:30:33.090 a rodent and he told me no actually you 00:30:35.72000:30:35.730 know what like a month after you left I 00:30:38.20000:30:38.210 actually happened to come down to my 00:30:40.31000:30:40.320 basement and I was lucky that I came 00:30:42.05000:30:42.060 down there at that time I saw my 00:30:43.76000:30:43.770 electrical outlet in that room starting 00:30:46.97000:30:46.980 to smolder and melt and smoke luckily he 00:30:49.97000:30:49.980 was there when that was happening so he 00:30:51.47000:30:51.480 was able to just shut off his breaker to 00:30:53.27000:30:53.280 that room and get an electrician out 00:30:54.98000:30:54.990 there and get that whole outlet replaced 00:30:56.90000:30:56.910 but that was kind of interesting that 00:30:58.49000:30:58.500 Bert rodent smell was actually coming 00:31:00.92000:31:00.930 from his electrical outlet frying itself 00:31:03.86000:31:03.870 I had one call where too many vents were 00:31:05.90000:31:05.910 closed off so the customer had just two 00:31:08.30000:31:08.310 floors and he had more events on his 00:31:10.85000:31:10.860 basement floor than he did in his upper 00:31:12.59000:31:12.600 floor and he closed them all off and 00:31:14.54000:31:14.550 that was just too much vents closed off 00:31:16.37000:31:16.380 and his furnace started to overheat so I 00:31:18.53000:31:18.540 told him to open all of them back up and 00:31:20.27000:31:20.280 his supply temperature coming out the 00:31:22.01000:31:22.020 furnace dropped drastically after he 00:31:23.99000:31:24.000 opened up all the vents I had two calls 00:31:26.03000:31:26.040 where the customer would call and say 00:31:27.41000:31:27.420 hey my furnace is leaking up a storm 00:31:29.63000:31:29.640 there's a big puddle underneath it I 00:31:31.22000:31:31.230 would come out and the furnace is not 00:31:33.02000:31:33.030 leaking at all in fact some of those 00:31:34.76000:31:34.770 furnaces are 80% furnaces which don't 00:31:37.25000:31:37.260 even create water so if you're running 00:31:38.96000:31:38.970 your furnace there should be no water so 00:31:41.24000:31:41.250 whenever I get a furnace call that 00:31:42.62000:31:42.630 involves the furnace leaking water I all 00:31:44.87000:31:44.880 look around the furnace like for example 00:31:46.94000:31:46.950 I have a water heater right next to mine 00:31:48.50000:31:48.510 I have a humidifier and those two calls 00:31:51.11000:31:51.120 that I had both of them were a 00:31:53.15000:31:53.160 humidifier that was leaking what 00:31:55.28000:31:55.290 happened is they didn't replace their 00:31:56.69000:31:56.700 water panel filter inside their 00:31:58.28000:31:58.290 humidifier for a long time and 00:32:00.14000:32:00.150 eventually that water panel just gets 00:32:02.27000:32:02.280 really brittle and soggy and it just 00:32:04.37000:32:04.380 kind of flops down and if water is 00:32:06.35000:32:06.360 pouring out if you have your humidifier 00:32:07.79000:32:07.800 on it just runs down your return duct it 00:32:11.69000:32:11.700 just starts to pull up pull up and 00:32:13.61000:32:13.620 eventually you're gonna have water all 00:32:14.90000:32:14.910 over the floor around your friends 00:32:16.37000:32:16.380 I had one call where the burners the in 00:32:19.43000:32:19.440 shot burners were so dirty that the 00:32:21.92000:32:21.930 carbon monoxide readings I was getting 00:32:23.51000:32:23.520 were like over 400 parts per million and 00:32:26.12000:32:26.130 all I had to do is take all those in 00:32:27.95000:32:27.960 shot burners out there was like a lot of 00:32:29.33000:32:29.340 rust and buildup on it just brush them 00:32:31.70000:32:31.710 all out real good I blew him out with 00:32:33.47000:32:33.480 some compressed air put him back in and 00:32:35.51000:32:35.520 that dropped it - if my memory doesn't 00:32:37.94000:32:37.950 fail me I think it was like 45 which is 00:32:40.67000:32:40.680 a pretty big change from 400 I had four 00:32:43.01000:32:43.020 calls where there was a weak blower 00:32:45.11000:32:45.120 motor capacitor the customer would say 00:32:47.30000:32:47.310 whenever my blower motor starts it 00:32:49.28000:32:49.290 starts off very sluggishly 00:32:51.32000:32:51.330 so I checked the capacitor with my meter 00:32:52.97000:32:52.980 and sure enough the capacitor is almost 00:32:54.89000:32:54.900 dead so I replaced the capacitor and 00:32:56.75000:32:56.760 everything is good to go but if the 00:32:58.13000:32:58.140 capacitor is really weak or almost near 00:33:00.56000:33:00.570 dead then you're better off just 00:33:02.24000:33:02.250 replacing the motor as well but if you 00:33:04.22000:33:04.230 want a temporary fix then replacing that 00:33:06.08000:33:06.090 capacitor should do the trick I had one 00:33:08.30000:33:08.310 call where two thermostat wire inside 00:33:10.28000:33:10.290 the thermostat was bad and what that 00:33:13.01000:33:13.020 looked like is you know nothing was 00:33:14.57000:33:14.580 working 00:33:14.93000:33:14.940 I took the thermostat off the wall all 00:33:16.73000:33:16.740 the wires are connected right but when I 00:33:18.98000:33:18.990 gently target on each wire the W wire 00:33:22.13000:33:22.140 just kind of snapped right off so that 00:33:24.95000:33:24.960 little copper part that goes under the 00:33:27.02000:33:27.030 screw that was just broken right off and 00:33:29.15000:33:29.160 that was interrupting the call for heat 00:33:30.89000:33:30.900 so all I have to do is snip that part 00:33:32.75000:33:32.760 off strip off another piece of wire put 00:33:34.91000:33:34.920 it back in there and everything fired 00:33:36.26000:33:36.270 right back up I had four calls where the 00:33:39.17000:33:39.180 customers thought that his furnace 00:33:40.55000:33:40.560 wasn't working but it actually was a 00:33:42.17000:33:42.180 programmable thermostat that they didn't 00:33:44.06000:33:44.070 know how to use so they would set a 00:33:45.89000:33:45.900 temperature on their thermostat but the 00:33:47.72000:33:47.730 program like every couple hours it'll 00:33:49.85000:33:49.860 revert back to the programming and the 00:33:52.04000:33:52.050 customer didn't know that there's a hole 00:33:53.63000:33:53.640 but indeed press it it overrides the 00:33:55.73000:33:55.740 program and they weren't aware that 00:33:57.47000:33:57.480 there's a program in the back 00:33:58.91000:33:58.920 so they'd be constantly battling their 00:34:00.80000:34:00.810 thermostat and I'm thinking that their 00:34:02.39000:34:02.400 furnace isn't keeping up because the 00:34:03.89000:34:03.900 thermostat would automatically revert 00:34:05.45000:34:05.460 back to the programming that's in the 00:34:07.16000:34:07.170 background so those calls become a 00:34:08.66000:34:08.670 little educational session I teach them 00:34:10.34000:34:10.350 how the programming works and most 00:34:12.02000:34:12.030 importantly I teach them about the whole 00:34:13.76000:34:13.770 button so you set the temperature to 00:34:15.53000:34:15.540 whatever you want you press hold and 00:34:16.88000:34:16.890 that will override any programming 00:34:18.59000:34:18.600 that's in the background and most people 00:34:20.27000:34:20.280 like that hold option the most I had two 00:34:22.64000:34:22.650 calls where the transformer was bad and 00:34:24.44000:34:24.450 generally what will be bad is the 00:34:25.91000:34:25.920 secondary side transformers they have 00:34:27.92000:34:27.930 two sides they have the primary side 00:34:29.42000:34:29.430 which is the 120 volt side and then you 00:34:31.73000:34:31.740 got the secondary side which is your 24 00:34:33.59000:34:33.600 volt side most of the time it's that 24 00:34:35.78000:34:35.790 volt side that goes bad so if you 00:34:37.67000:34:37.680 disconnect both wires from it and just 00:34:39.20000:34:39.210 take a resistance reading or an ohm 00:34:41.42000:34:41.430 reading of that secondary side if you 00:34:43.52000:34:43.530 see o L that means that secondary side 00:34:45.68000:34:45.690 of the transformer is bad and it needs 00:34:47.27000:34:47.280 to be replaced 00:34:48.08000:34:48.090 another easy way to check it is if you 00:34:50.39000:34:50.400 have 120 volts going to the primary side 00:34:52.46000:34:52.470 of the transformer you should be getting 00:34:54.32000:34:54.330 24 volts on the other side as well so if 00:34:56.69000:34:56.700 you set your meter to voltage and put 00:34:58.34000:34:58.350 your meter leads on the secondary side 00:34:59.81000:34:59.820 you should have 24 volts if your primary 00:35:02.00000:35:02.010 side has 120 volts if you don't have 24 00:35:04.91000:35:04.920 volts that means your transformer is bad 00:35:06.53000:35:06.540 and should be replaced I had two calls 00:35:08.66000:35:08.670 where the fan really was bad and this is 00:35:10.88000:35:10.890 mostly just on older furnaces where 00:35:13.52000:35:13.530 instead of a control board it'll have a 00:35:15.50000:35:15.510 fan relay and those tend to get either 00:35:17.69000:35:17.700 stuck open or stuck closed and it won't 00:35:19.97000:35:19.980 turn on the fan or in the contrary 00:35:21.77000:35:21.780 it'll always run the fan non-stop so you 00:35:23.99000:35:24.000 just replace that fan relay and your 00:35:25.52000:35:25.530 problem goes away 00:35:26.54000:35:26.550 I had one call where the motor bracket 00:35:28.46000:35:28.470 was loose so whenever the blower motor 00:35:30.62000:35:30.630 would come on it would come on with a 00:35:31.85000:35:31.860 really loud bang just boom and then I 00:35:34.40000:35:34.410 would start and the reason that was 00:35:35.99000:35:36.000 happening is the motor bracket that 00:35:38.15000:35:38.160 holds that motor it was loosely on there 00:35:41.03000:35:41.040 so whenever the motor would start the 00:35:42.68000:35:42.690 torque from the motor would crank the 00:35:44.87000:35:44.880 motor and it would just hit against the 00:35:46.64000:35:46.650 bracket and that's what would make that 00:35:47.93000:35:47.940 loud racket every time it started so I 00:35:49.94000:35:49.950 took that bracket off I threw it away 00:35:51.23000:35:51.240 and I put on the MB 55 motor bracket and 00:35:54.14000:35:54.150 it worked like a champ no more noise I 00:35:56.06000:35:56.070 only had one furnace call where the 00:35:57.92000:35:57.930 power switch was just simply off I don't 00:36:00.56000:36:00.570 know what happened maybe some kids were 00:36:02.21000:36:02.220 playing and bumped it off or somebody 00:36:03.95000:36:03.960 was replacing a furnace filter and 00:36:05.45000:36:05.460 bumped it off well all I had to do was 00:36:07.19000:36:07.200 turn that furnace power switch back on 00:36:08.69000:36:08.700 and everything fired right back up I had 00:36:11.33000:36:11.340 three calls for noise 00:36:12.57000:36:12.580 fairness and one of those was the 00:36:14.82000:36:14.830 sheetmetal piece that's on the bottom of 00:36:16.71000:36:16.720 the furnace somehow they had come undone 00:36:18.87000:36:18.880 and it was just making a noise every 00:36:21.27000:36:21.280 time the blower motor is working because 00:36:22.80000:36:22.810 of the suction so only one side was 00:36:25.14000:36:25.150 undone so just sit there and kind of hit 00:36:28.05000:36:28.060 against the cabinet of the furnace 00:36:29.52000:36:29.530 making a rattling noise so all I had to 00:36:31.53000:36:31.540 do was just secure that metal panel to 00:36:33.60000:36:33.610 the cabinet of the furnace with the 00:36:34.83000:36:34.840 screw and the noise went away I had 00:36:36.51000:36:36.520 another one where two bore a motor for 00:36:38.10000:36:38.110 some reason was noisy and I could not 00:36:39.60000:36:39.610 figure out why but every time I would 00:36:41.55000:36:41.560 stick my hand in and push the blower 00:36:43.14000:36:43.150 motor housing up the noise would go away 00:36:45.33000:36:45.340 so because I couldn't really figure out 00:36:47.49000:36:47.500 why it's doing that 00:36:48.72000:36:48.730 I just took a 2x4 and just jammed it 00:36:51.03000:36:51.040 underneath the blower motor and that 00:36:52.56000:36:52.570 solved the problem and the last noise 00:36:54.03000:36:54.040 call I had was regarding the ductwork so 00:36:57.00000:36:57.010 everything was working great but it was 00:36:58.32000:36:58.330 rattling up a storm throughout the 00:37:00.30000:37:00.310 ductwork and I found the spot the 00:37:02.67000:37:02.680 culprit and somehow the slip joint or 00:37:05.25000:37:05.260 the drive I should say got undone and it 00:37:07.68000:37:07.690 was just rattling up a storm so all I 00:37:09.60000:37:09.610 had to do is just push that thing back 00:37:11.28000:37:11.290 together and the noise went away I had 00:37:13.38000:37:13.390 two thermostat calls where the 00:37:15.06000:37:15.070 thermostat was wired wrong and usually 00:37:17.19000:37:17.200 that happens because the customer 00:37:18.90000:37:18.910 replaces the thermostat and they forgot 00:37:20.91000:37:20.920 to look at the wiring and how its wired 00:37:22.98000:37:22.990 before they took the old wires off so 00:37:25.08000:37:25.090 they put the new one back on and the 00:37:26.55000:37:26.560 labels are a little different and 00:37:27.78000:37:27.790 they're not sure where everything goes 00:37:29.04000:37:29.050 so they do it through the best of their 00:37:30.78000:37:30.790 memory and a day or two later I come out 00:37:33.27000:37:33.280 to fix it I had one call where gas valve 00:37:36.60000:37:36.610 was set to pilot this was on a really 00:37:38.55000:37:38.560 old furnace the gas valve had three 00:37:40.71000:37:40.720 positions - on/off and pilot it was 00:37:43.05000:37:43.060 actually a standing pilot and I guess 00:37:45.09000:37:45.100 during the summer the customer had 00:37:46.35000:37:46.360 turned his gas valve to pilot and forgot 00:37:48.09000:37:48.100 about it so all I had to do was just 00:37:49.77000:37:49.780 come out there and turned a knob to the 00:37:51.45000:37:51.460 on position and they fired right up and 00:37:53.22000:37:53.230 everything worked great 00:37:54.09000:37:54.100 I had one call where I had a bad spark 00:37:56.37000:37:56.380 module it's just a little black box 00:37:58.02000:37:58.030 where your spark igniter hooks up - and 00:38:00.27000:38:00.280 that little black box was the one that 00:38:02.13000:38:02.140 sends the spark so the box is bad 00:38:04.20000:38:04.210 therefore no spark and nothing happens 00:38:06.42000:38:06.430 so I replaced the spark module and it 00:38:08.31000:38:08.320 fired right back up 00:38:09.27000:38:09.280 I had one call where the flame rollout 00:38:10.92000:38:10.930 switch was tripped so I reset it I 00:38:13.23000:38:13.240 checked everything and I couldn't find 00:38:15.24000:38:15.250 why that thing had tripped so I 00:38:17.34000:38:17.350 double-checked everything again and once 00:38:19.02000:38:19.030 again found nothing wrong so that one 00:38:20.73000:38:20.740 was kind of interesting I had three 00:38:22.41000:38:22.420 calls where the gas pressure was set to 00:38:24.15000:38:24.160 high on the gas valve and 00:38:26.19000:38:26.200 either set too high or not adjusted when 00:38:29.00900:38:29.019 the furnace was installed originally or 00:38:30.80900:38:30.819 maybe another service tech came out 00:38:32.33900:38:32.349 previously and set the gas pressure too 00:38:34.71000:38:34.720 high or if you don't have a regulator on 00:38:37.14000:38:37.150 your gas piping it couldn't even be from 00:38:39.26900:38:39.279 the gas company if their gas pressures 00:38:41.19000:38:41.200 we're going up and down that could 00:38:42.77900:38:42.789 affect your gas valve as well and just 00:38:44.97000:38:44.980 throw off its pressures so all I have to 00:38:46.79900:38:46.809 do on those calls is just adjust the gas 00:38:48.69000:38:48.700 pressure it should be between three 00:38:50.49000:38:50.500 point two and three point eight inches 00:38:52.38000:38:52.390 of water column I usually set it at 00:38:54.15000:38:54.160 about three point four I had three calls 00:38:56.25000:38:56.260 where there was a spiderweb 00:38:57.42000:38:57.430 inside of the gas valve corpus and those 00:39:00.48000:39:00.490 particular calls are in mobile home 00:39:03.02900:39:03.039 furnaces or in the trailer park 00:39:04.76900:39:04.779 furnaces generally coleman's it'll be 00:39:07.71000:39:07.720 just one gas valve with an orifice 00:39:09.24000:39:09.250 inside of it with one big burner and 00:39:11.03900:39:11.049 that orifice if you screw it apart 00:39:13.34900:39:13.359 during the summer it seems like spiders 00:39:15.35900:39:15.369 just love to make a web in there just a 00:39:17.70000:39:17.710 complete web that covers up the whole 00:39:19.31900:39:19.329 gas valve orifice so if you take a 00:39:21.00000:39:21.010 wrench and take that morphers out you'll 00:39:23.09900:39:23.109 see a bunch of stuff in there just clear 00:39:24.59900:39:24.609 it all out put that orphis back on put 00:39:26.84900:39:26.859 it all back together and the furnace 00:39:28.14000:39:28.150 fires right back up I also had one call 00:39:30.24000:39:30.250 where the orifice on the gas manifold 00:39:32.37000:39:32.380 was plugged up also from a spider 00:39:34.20000:39:34.210 there's four of them generally on 00:39:36.56900:39:36.579 furnaces like this you'll have four 00:39:38.88000:39:38.890 offices sometimes five or six depending 00:39:41.88000:39:41.890 on how many burners you have but if you 00:39:43.71000:39:43.720 take an inspection mirror and just stick 00:39:46.07900:39:46.089 it in there and look at every single 00:39:47.60900:39:47.619 orifice what was happening is all my 00:39:50.30900:39:50.319 burners would light but my third burner 00:39:52.07900:39:52.089 would not come on so I stuck an 00:39:54.21000:39:54.220 inspection mirror in there and I saw 00:39:55.52900:39:55.539 that the orifice was just covered with 00:39:58.04900:39:58.059 white stuff which turned out to be a 00:39:59.78900:39:59.799 spider web so in that case all I had to 00:40:01.82900:40:01.839 do was just take a little piece of wire 00:40:03.29900:40:03.309 I bent it and just pulled it in there 00:40:05.57900:40:05.589 and just cleared that work force out 00:40:06.72000:40:06.730 that way I didn't have to take out this 00:40:08.24900:40:08.259 whole manifold to clean it I tested it 00:40:10.52900:40:10.539 and it fired right back up 00:40:11.94000:40:11.950 I had one call where I carry our inducer 00:40:14.33900:40:14.349 motor there was a few model of carriers 00:40:16.41000:40:16.420 where for some reason their pressure 00:40:18.56900:40:18.579 switch ports on the carrier inducer 00:40:20.94000:40:20.950 motor assembly was too small and purred 00:40:23.81900:40:23.829 a manufacturer you actually had to drill 00:40:26.03900:40:26.049 out that pressure switch port otherwise 00:40:28.38000:40:28.390 your furnace would always have pressure 00:40:29.78900:40:29.799 switch problems which was exactly what 00:40:31.74000:40:31.750 was happening to me they kept having a 00:40:33.72000:40:33.730 pressure switch problem and after I 00:40:35.27900:40:35.289 drilled out that port and put the hose 00:40:36.77900:40:36.789 back on that problem went away I had 00:40:39.08900:40:39.099 three calls 00:40:39.75000:40:39.760 the condensate trap was leaking 00:40:41.13000:40:41.140 generally it'll be those carrier traps 00:40:43.08000:40:43.090 sometimes they'll be the Lennox traps 00:40:44.88000:40:44.890 where it'll be a black trap either 00:40:46.50000:40:46.510 inside or on the side of the furnace and 00:40:48.42000:40:48.430 once again of course this only applies 00:40:50.22000:40:50.230 to high efficiency furnaces and the fix 00:40:52.44000:40:52.450 for that is just replacing that trap 00:40:54.54000:40:54.550 I had one call where the actual power 00:40:56.37000:40:56.380 switch on the side of the furnace was 00:40:58.29000:40:58.300 bad and once that switch got replaced 00:41:00.03000:41:00.040 everything fired right back up 00:41:01.80000:41:01.810 I had three calls where the furnace 00:41:03.48000:41:03.490 blower speed was set to low for that 00:41:06.30000:41:06.310 size of a furnace so all I had to do was 00:41:08.60900:41:08.619 just increase the fan speed and 00:41:09.96000:41:09.970 everything went back to normal 00:41:11.19000:41:11.200 I had three calls where the condensate 00:41:12.93000:41:12.940 line was leaking once again on high 00:41:14.60900:41:14.619 efficiency furnaces I believe two of 00:41:16.59000:41:16.600 them were PVC piping where I guess 00:41:18.87000:41:18.880 somebody stepped on them and it cracked 00:41:20.22000:41:20.230 and the fix for that is pretty simple 00:41:21.72000:41:21.730 just replace that whole condensate drain 00:41:23.64000:41:23.650 line if it's very long then just replace 00:41:25.92000:41:25.930 that piece that is leaking I went on one 00:41:27.87000:41:27.880 call where the customer said his furnace 00:41:29.49000:41:29.500 was not working not doing anything and 00:41:31.56000:41:31.570 all it was is his thermostat was just 00:41:33.66000:41:33.670 simply turned off so they would adjust 00:41:36.15000:41:36.160 the temperature but nothing was 00:41:37.26000:41:37.270 happening nothing was turning on so all 00:41:39.03000:41:39.040 I had to do on that call is literally 00:41:40.34900:41:40.359 just turn it to heat and everything 00:41:41.73000:41:41.74000:41:42.99000:41:43.000 I had one call where I had to relight a 00:41:44.94000:41:44.950 standing pilot I guess a downdraft must 00:41:47.49000:41:47.500 have put it out or something I reloaded 00:41:49.26000:41:49.270 the thermocouple is good the pilot flame 00:41:51.27000:41:51.280 looked nice everything worked great I 00:41:53.64000:41:53.650 replaced three inducer control boards 00:41:55.92000:41:55.930 and not very many furnaces habit I think 00:41:58.59000:41:58.600 it's mainly carrier the older model of 00:42:00.59900:42:00.609 carriers that have them where the 00:42:02.13000:42:02.140 inducer motor will have its own little 00:42:03.66000:42:03.670 control board and those tend to go bad 00:42:06.09000:42:06.100 so it replaced three of those I had 00:42:08.13000:42:08.140 three bird nests in the intake this 00:42:10.83000:42:10.840 mostly applies to the high efficiency 00:42:12.57000:42:12.580 furnaces with the PVC vent and intake 00:42:14.84900:42:14.859 for some reason birds just love making 00:42:16.85900:42:16.869 nests inside of those intake pipes so I 00:42:19.29000:42:19.300 just cleared out those nests and the 00:42:20.76000:42:20.770 furnace fired right back up and finally 00:42:23.07000:42:23.080 the last one I'm starting to lose my 00:42:25.77000:42:25.780 voice here but the last one I only had 00:42:27.59900:42:27.609 one call and that one was the door 00:42:29.40000:42:29.410 switch was not being pushed in all the 00:42:31.26000:42:31.270 way by the furnace door and of course 00:42:33.59900:42:33.609 the door switch is almost like a 00:42:34.80000:42:34.810 secondary power switch so for some 00:42:37.05000:42:37.060 reason that's not pushed in that will 00:42:38.88000:42:38.890 interrupt power to your whole furnace so 00:42:40.77000:42:40.780 I guess the customer had taken off the 00:42:42.27000:42:42.280 bottom door and when he put it back on 00:42:44.16000:42:44.170 he didn't put it on correctly so it 00:42:45.69000:42:45.700 wasn't pushing the door switching all 00:42:46.98000:42:46.990 the way so all I have to do is put the 00:42:49.02000:42:49.030 door back on correctly so the door 00:42:50.84900:42:50.859 switch closes all the way and the 00:42:52.38000:42:52.390 furnace 00:42:52.75000:42:52.760 fired right back up well guys and that 00:42:54.88000:42:54.890 is it for my list of furnace problems I 00:42:56.77000:42:56.780 hope you found this video useful thank 00:42:58.63000:42:58.640 you so much for watching
