00:00:02.659 --> 00:00:08.460
My name's Allen Hart and today I wanted
to show you a new boiler so a new boiler
00:00:08.460 --> 00:00:14.460
that's not working so a commonly
question that we get asked on the groups
00:00:14.460 --> 00:00:22.260
in the in the gas chat and also other
groups on Facebook is we've installed a
00:00:22.260 --> 00:00:27.330
new boiler but it's not working
it's got power to it but the ball is not
00:00:27.330 --> 00:00:33.570
working so I want to show you now a
common problem so I would say is nine
00:00:33.570 --> 00:00:38.000
times out of ten maybe even more than
that it's gonna be installer error
00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:45.200
almost always its installer error so I'm
just going to show you that now just to
00:00:45.200 --> 00:00:51.500
hopefully get you out of a sticky
problem so this is not designed to be a
00:00:51.500 --> 00:00:57.239
training video on electrics it's just to
give you just a little overview of what
00:00:57.239 --> 00:01:02.460
the problem could be so always do your
safety checks always do all your
00:01:02.460 --> 00:01:05.489
electrical checks as you should with
your multimeter
00:01:05.489 --> 00:01:14.520
but for this well zoom in now and I'll
show you this boiler so I'm gonna switch
00:01:14.520 --> 00:01:21.210
the spare on so that gives us power you
know with cryptic wires into here so
00:01:21.210 --> 00:01:25.409
I've only done this just sucking news
multimeter so I can just show you what's
00:01:25.409 --> 00:01:30.299
going on but all I've done there is I've
connected the live together I've
00:01:30.299 --> 00:01:35.490
connected the new table together and
then the earth is connected together as
00:01:35.490 --> 00:01:42.030
well they're just almost a devil so
that's not not designed to trick you or
00:01:42.030 --> 00:01:50.479
anything like that and then we'll look
on the front of the boiler it's showing
00:01:50.479 --> 00:01:55.829
blank so it's showing that there's no
power to it so now what we're gonna do
00:01:55.829 --> 00:01:59.280
is we're never look with multimeter and
then we're gonna prove that we've got
00:01:59.280 --> 00:02:07.129
power to it and see what the issue is so
I've put one side into the earth and
00:02:07.129 --> 00:02:13.500
then this said I put it into the live so
we can see there we've got power
00:02:13.500 --> 00:02:17.970
to the boiler so that we've got power to
here anyway
00:02:17.970 --> 00:02:22.230
and then this power this from here then
goes to the boiler which will have lock
00:02:22.230 --> 00:02:27.450
in the bottle in a minute and then one
will look on the neutral we've got less
00:02:27.450 --> 00:02:31.740
than 15 so that's fine there so know
what we're gonna do is gonna check the
00:02:31.740 --> 00:02:35.430
kiss off the boiler and then we'll have
a look inside the boiler and we'll see
00:02:35.430 --> 00:02:40.800
what the issue is inside there so all
we've done now is we've proved that
00:02:40.800 --> 00:02:46.320
we've got power up this way here and so
this way is Center so now what we're
00:02:46.320 --> 00:02:50.250
gonna do is we're going to take the case
off the boiler and we're gonna check the
00:02:50.250 --> 00:02:55.830
wiring inside and then we can check the
continuity from the wires back to this
00:02:55.830 --> 00:03:01.620
wiring Center and we can see what the
problem is or could be so I always
00:03:01.620 --> 00:03:06.150
remember if you're gonna remove the case
of a boiler you must be gasps if
00:03:06.150 --> 00:03:13.680
registered so we're gonna do is
electrical check to make sure this is
00:03:13.680 --> 00:03:20.910
safe and turned off and isolated before
we remove the cover so I've just to the
00:03:20.910 --> 00:03:24.540
power off there and then we can test
that so on this boil there's just two
00:03:24.540 --> 00:03:29.730
screws a bomb a kiss so you can just do
kill them and the case will just lift
00:03:29.730 --> 00:03:31.940
off
00:03:36.349 --> 00:03:41.969
and then I'll just pull the flap down
and then we cannot look where the
00:03:41.969 --> 00:03:46.260
electrics are here and then we can test
this with the multimeter
00:03:46.260 --> 00:03:52.650
so I'll coming in less of a lock it's on
this spoiler the box is 600 she's got a
00:03:52.650 --> 00:04:01.919
clip it lifts out like that so this this
problem could be on any boiler really so
00:04:01.919 --> 00:04:08.250
what we're going here we've got his live
wire just there which is the brown one
00:04:08.250 --> 00:04:15.840
and then the blue one is as neutral and
then the green is the air for you so
00:04:15.840 --> 00:04:20.489
just for the purposes of this video
let's send the power back on to the
00:04:20.489 --> 00:04:29.639
boiler and then we're gonna do a few
checks I'll just show you we have the
00:04:29.639 --> 00:04:41.370
power source boiler so if we gone to the
earth there and we got to live we can
00:04:41.370 --> 00:04:49.699
see there that we've got 242 volts AC
and then when we got to the neutral
00:04:49.699 --> 00:04:59.009
we've also got 257 volts AC so we know
straight away that we've got an issue
00:04:59.009 --> 00:05:03.960
there we shouldn't have that much faults
on there so now what we're going to do
00:05:03.960 --> 00:05:08.639
is I'm going to turn the power back off
I'm gonna test these two wires here well
00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:13.590
I'm going to test all free with the
bleep on here and then we can see if
00:05:13.590 --> 00:05:17.419
we've got comfortable sit down the wires
00:05:34.020 --> 00:05:43.240
so I'm gonna put on to live here I'm
gonna put it back up to the live so we
00:05:43.240 --> 00:05:50.919
know we've got continuity there and now
I'm gonna deal the earth and again we
00:05:50.919 --> 00:05:58.330
can see that we've got continuity and
then now I'm gonna do the neutral so
00:05:58.330 --> 00:06:00.550
there we can see that we've got a
problem
00:06:00.550 --> 00:06:06.669
with the neutral and this is that this
is a common problem this a very very
00:06:06.669 --> 00:06:14.349
common problem so people they get to
five volts on to the brown on to the
00:06:14.349 --> 00:06:18.940
live and the thing that the boiler
should work but it needs to be weighed
00:06:18.940 --> 00:06:25.780
correctly so having a multimeter yes you
absolutely need a multimeter for this
00:06:25.780 --> 00:06:31.150
job so just to confirm there we've got a
problem with this neutral so what I'm
00:06:31.150 --> 00:06:35.680
going to do is I will set the way out
and I'm going to show you so we've
00:06:35.680 --> 00:06:41.319
turned the power off with the power is
off and we checked it's off so when we
00:06:41.319 --> 00:06:46.380
pull this wire out of here we can see
00:06:57.879 --> 00:07:03.499
we can just say that won't throw it back
enough so we just had a faulty neutral
00:07:03.499 --> 00:07:10.009
so even though we have power to the
boiler here we couldn't get the return
00:07:10.009 --> 00:07:14.419
if you like so if you imagine the the
the lie Buster floor and the blue is the
00:07:14.419 --> 00:07:20.749
return so the return was blocked if you
like to make it easy so what we need to
00:07:20.749 --> 00:07:24.559
do now is we need to just cut our back
connects in and then this will probably
00:07:24.559 --> 00:07:31.449
work so although we'll do that now and
then we can test it and they'll can see
00:07:31.509 --> 00:07:37.610
so I'm just gonna put the power back on
now so if you know that straight away so
00:07:37.610 --> 00:07:44.180
we know that boiler well let's come on
anywhere but just to show you now when
00:07:44.180 --> 00:07:51.790
you put you
you live to neutral you've got to factor
00:07:51.790 --> 00:07:57.490
and life to earth you've got too far to
so now when you do your neutral to your
00:07:57.490 --> 00:08:08.980
earth we've got less than 15 so now we
know that that's working okay so that
00:08:08.980 --> 00:08:14.950
was just a very basic fault on a boiler
but it's fairly common and I see it
00:08:14.950 --> 00:08:18.930
quite a lot so justify to share that
with you so I don't think what's a
00:08:18.930 --> 00:08:24.040
multimeter it's one of the most
important pieces of kit you can have in
00:08:24.040 --> 00:08:30.130
your toolbox so what's a is if you can
get yourself on some multimeter training
00:08:30.130 --> 00:08:34.870
and learn more about the multimeter
because that's what helped you fix
00:08:34.870 --> 00:08:41.410
boilers and get things working so I hope
this video was awesome news and thanks
00:08:41.410 --> 00:08:43.620
for watching
