00:00:00.030
this is a PMR boiler I'm just recently
00:00:02.869 00:00:02.879 made as you can see it's a riveted
00:00:07.940 00:00:07.950 construction which is then silver
00:00:10.820 00:00:10.830 soldered to make it watertight
00:00:13.240 00:00:13.250 it's an American boiler and it's
00:00:16.760 00:00:16.770 available as a kit of parts from America
00:00:19.340 00:00:19.350 and you can find it easily on the
00:00:21.650 00:00:21.660 Internet the pipe work that you can see
00:00:26.990 00:00:27.000 has been added on extra by myself to sue
00:00:30.439 00:00:30.449 my own purposes if you like the boiler
00:00:34.720 00:00:34.730 comes complete with the safety valve
00:00:38.030 00:00:38.040 seen at the very top of the steam door
00:00:39.740 00:00:39.750 and the water gauge on this right-hand
00:00:43.910 00:00:43.920 side the boiler runs from solid fuel
00:00:49.750 00:00:49.760 tablets and they're placed inside this
00:00:56.049 00:00:56.059 cloud chamber there these two doors at
00:00:59.810 00:00:59.820 the bottom appeal with a control in the
00:01:02.450 00:01:02.460 draft so into there you place about
00:01:08.840 00:01:08.850 three tablets like them and having put
00:01:13.460 00:01:13.470 water in the boiler in a few minutes
00:01:16.219 00:01:16.229 even rear steam and you get about five
00:01:22.670 00:01:22.680 minutes steaming out of three tablets
00:01:25.539 00:01:25.549 having brought the water up to
00:01:27.440 00:01:27.450 temperature here we have the smart box
00:01:34.179 00:01:34.189 you can see out there and that copper
00:01:38.749 00:01:38.759 tube is my attempt at making a super
00:01:40.880 00:01:40.890 heater and it's an extra really and
00:01:44.859 00:01:44.869 something I've come up with myself if
00:01:48.170 00:01:48.180 you have a look here of the pipe work
00:01:50.289 00:01:50.299 you can see the steam comes out the
00:01:53.749 00:01:53.759 steam door through that pipe there into
00:01:57.740 00:01:57.750 the super heater which looped round like
00:02:00.499 00:02:00.509 that back out that side down there
00:02:06.190 00:02:06.200 through the globe valve
00:02:10.679 00:02:10.689 displacement lubricator and then into
00:02:13.479 00:02:13.489 the engine this brass pipe here takes
00:02:17.259 00:02:17.269 the exhaust from the engine up into a
00:02:20.350 00:02:20.360 chimney then out once fear that brass
00:02:26.050 00:02:26.060 spine therefore the exhaust is an extra
00:02:28.420 00:02:28.430 and I've just simply soldered it into
00:02:31.240 00:02:31.250 the base of that tube which forms a
00:02:34.179 00:02:34.189 chimney the finial to the chimney as
00:02:36.789 00:02:36.799 well is an extra item and if you were to
00:02:39.880 00:02:39.890 do one you could make one any
00:02:41.440 00:02:41.450 particulars share but took you fancy
00:02:46.559 00:02:46.569 because it's an American boiler most of
00:02:50.649 00:02:50.659 the bushes that supplied with it have
00:02:53.289 00:02:53.299 American threads in so before I actually
00:02:56.589 00:02:56.599 went to the trouble of solder in the
00:02:57.729 00:02:57.739 main I remade those bushes with Hemi
00:03:01.330 00:03:01.340 threads to sue English stuff and the
00:03:05.920 00:03:05.930 only one that had to leave as an
00:03:07.330 00:03:07.340 American thread was that one there for
00:03:11.140 00:03:11.150 the safety valve there between the two
00:03:14.849 00:03:14.859 rows of brass nipple or a piece of long
00:03:18.490 00:03:18.500 brass tube which I took the opportunity
00:03:21.640 00:03:21.650 of cutting in half and joining together
00:03:24.939 00:03:24.949 with to model engineer threads through
00:03:28.899 00:03:28.909 that brass collar there that to enable
00:03:31.599 00:03:31.609 me to connect an ore to 300 psi gauge
00:03:36.270 00:03:36.280 the testing purposes of the boiler once
00:03:38.920 00:03:38.930 it was finished I think if I was doing
00:03:42.159 00:03:42.169 it again I would remake that Bush there
00:03:47.099 00:03:47.109 to be 5/16 semi thread and recut the
00:03:55.990 00:03:56.000 thread on the bottom the brass nipple
00:03:57.580 00:03:57.590 there to suit leaving the American
00:04:01.839 00:04:01.849 thread at the top to Kennedy safety
00:04:03.819 00:04:03.829 valve and only that only because really
00:04:06.759 00:04:06.769 the safety valve is included as part of
00:04:08.349 00:04:08.359 the key and it says buy an onion
00:04:10.000 00:04:10.010 one from an English sauce so the boiler
00:04:16.140 00:04:16.150 basically works quite simply the fire
00:04:19.979 00:04:19.989 runs along the bottom of the boiler up
00:04:24.490 00:04:24.500 through a cutout in the bottom half of
00:04:26.980 00:04:26.990 the boiler there then back along the
00:04:28.930 00:04:28.940 center of the boiler in five fire tubes
00:04:32.879 00:04:32.889 which you may just be able to see in
00:04:36.550 00:04:36.560 that shot there if our venting into the
00:04:39.250 00:04:39.260 smoke box and out through the chimney so
00:04:42.670 00:04:42.680 it means it's quite an efficient boiler
00:04:44.520 00:04:44.530 it does really resting quite quickly
00:04:48.450 00:04:48.460 they pressure gauge you can see there
00:04:52.330 00:04:52.340 again is something that I've added on
00:04:54.129 00:04:54.139 and it's a not to 80 psi gauge because
00:04:58.420 00:04:58.430 the working pressure for the boiler it's
00:05:00.879 00:05:00.889 60 psi and that's the pressure at which
00:05:05.890 00:05:05.900 the safety valve laws this glove valve
00:05:11.409 00:05:11.419 here is a second tap off from the steam
00:05:15.100 00:05:15.110 dome to allow a second engine to be run
00:05:19.360 00:05:19.370 from the bottle at this side but without
00:05:20.890 00:05:20.900 the benefit of the super heater in the
00:05:23.770 00:05:23.780 firebox on the outside
00:05:25.680 00:05:25.690 it's quite an attractive by the way it's
00:05:28.180 00:05:28.190 made if you bought it as a made-up kit
00:05:32.050 00:05:32.060 from America they usually come painted
00:05:34.870 00:05:34.880 black but because I made it myself
00:05:37.839 00:05:37.849 chose not to parent Ian left his polish
00:05:40.540 00:05:40.550 copper which looks quite good so there
00:05:45.580 00:05:45.590 you are they say it takes about two days
00:05:48.370 00:05:48.380 to make I think he took me longer than
00:05:51.760 00:05:51.770 that but that's partly to do with the
00:05:54.790 00:05:54.800 fact that along with the key to
00:05:56.439 00:05:56.449 materials for the boiler you also get
00:05:59.230 00:05:59.240 the materials to make the tools that you
00:06:01.779 00:06:01.789 need to make the boiler these include
00:06:07.649 00:06:07.659 enough tool steel to make the rivet
00:06:14.439 00:06:14.449 snaps you can see there that's the domed
00:06:18.129 00:06:18.139 one
00:06:19.909 00:06:19.919 and finally riveting all the rivets
00:06:22.959 00:06:22.969 that's the square Jean - and that's the
00:06:29.869 00:06:29.879 pull-up - you also have enough steel
00:06:37.489 00:06:37.499 there for the bottom dolly for the rivet
00:06:39.379 00:06:39.389 in which goes inside the cylinder of the
00:06:42.050 00:06:42.060 boiler hmm this Ben had it held in the
00:06:45.080 00:06:45.090 vise and the boiler shell slipped on
00:06:47.809 00:06:47.819 over there and they've really has locate
00:06:50.959 00:06:50.969 internally into that dome cut out there
00:06:54.550 00:06:54.560 and I'm dolly the other thing you get
00:06:59.149 00:06:59.159 steel for is the flaring - which is
00:07:04.070 00:07:04.080 basically a piece of hexagon steel which
00:07:09.200 00:07:09.210 you cut in half and ship at one end with
00:07:13.159 00:07:13.169 the 45 degree taper for flaring out the
00:07:16.309 00:07:16.319 fire tubes and then with a stepped
00:07:19.820 00:07:19.830 arrangement of the other end for
00:07:22.219 00:07:22.229 converting the flare into a rivet effect
00:07:26.689 00:07:26.699 really on the fire tube in the boiler
00:07:28.909 00:07:28.919 prior to solder it so all that's
00:07:31.640 00:07:31.650 included you just have to do the Machine
00:07:34.249 00:07:34.259 in to make it work
00:07:41.250 00:07:41.260 so there we are at this end of a toilet
00:07:44.870 00:07:44.880 I've fitted a one-way valve or filling
00:07:50.730 00:07:50.740 the bottle with water as steaming
00:07:53.430 00:07:53.440 progresses and you can see there the
00:07:56.720 00:07:56.730 aluminium end plate which just simply
00:08:00.990 00:08:01.000 needs a little bit of fatling and also
00:08:06.030 00:08:06.040 the holes drilling for fixing to the
00:08:08.190 00:08:08.200 boiler shell the tie rods as well that
00:08:10.800 00:08:10.810 you can see that as far of those go
00:08:12.360 00:08:12.370 right through from one end to the other
00:08:13.650 00:08:13.660 they need cut into lengths and tapping
00:08:16.370 00:08:16.380 or threading to take the nuts which hold
00:08:19.920 00:08:19.930 a housing together the smoke box door
00:08:26.600 00:08:26.610 again fixes on to the boiler shell there
00:08:29.580 00:08:29.590 and the best of the chimney also fits on
00:08:33.390 00:08:33.400 there this needs barring out so that's
00:08:35.880 00:08:35.890 quite a tricky operation because the
00:08:38.300 00:08:38.310 chimney is just a slide in fear inside
00:08:43.910 00:08:43.920 so there you can see the dolls
00:08:50.160 00:08:50.170 themselves on the smart box also the
00:08:53.550 00:08:53.560 firebox comers die cast aluminium just
00:08:58.830 00:08:58.840 need a simple bit of fettling and then
00:09:02.490 00:09:02.500 drilling the hole for the hinge pins
00:09:04.620 00:09:04.630 their hinge pins being formed out of
00:09:08.000 00:09:08.010 1/16 inch brass rod so they're quite
00:09:11.730 00:09:11.740 nice look quite well the handle itself
00:09:17.910 00:09:17.920 is made out of a single piece of brass
00:09:20.300 00:09:20.310 cutting two to one piece of spindle
00:09:25.280 00:09:25.290 second piece to make the handle part
00:09:27.540 00:09:27.550 which goes through the spindle to a tiny
00:09:30.450 00:09:30.460 hole and he's actually riveted over and
00:09:32.660 00:09:32.670 the far end of the spindle if you can
00:09:35.850 00:09:35.860 see there needs bending over to lock it
00:09:39.120 00:09:39.130 on the back of the top of the smallpox a
00:09:43.940 00:09:43.950 little bit fiddly the output
00:09:46.819 00:09:46.829 once done it works well now I would
00:09:49.319 00:09:49.329 recommend a nail in the end of the
00:09:51.030 00:09:51.040 spindle before you bend it just don't
00:09:53.790 00:09:53.800 sure it doesn't break off so there we
00:09:59.550 00:09:59.560 have a
