00:00:00.060
we have a six-year-old goodman with
00:00:03.679 00:00:03.689 aluminum evaporator and it has a leak is
00:00:07.789 00:00:07.799 the first aluminum evaporator leak I've
00:00:11.629 00:00:11.639 seen and I wanted to show why it's
00:00:14.839 00:00:14.849 leaking it has to do with the waterline
00:00:19.490 00:00:19.500 which is about a half inch up and then
00:00:24.050 00:00:24.060 the aluminum tube being underwater now
00:00:28.040 00:00:28.050 this one wasn't leaking on this side but
00:00:30.019 00:00:30.029 you can see some pretty serious
00:00:32.470 00:00:32.480 corrosion going on there how the leaking
00:00:37.190 00:00:37.200 tube is right on the bottom in the back
00:00:39.500 00:00:39.510 there
00:00:42.400 00:00:42.410 it's almost disintegrated you can see it
00:00:58.569 00:00:58.579 you see it right there
00:01:02.020 00:01:02.030 bobaloo Goodman was one of the first
00:01:09.130 00:01:09.140 aluminum evaporators and so they've had
00:01:13.789 00:01:13.799 the aluminum below the waterline I wind
00:01:16.580 00:01:16.590 looked at a bunch of other units carrier
00:01:20.740 00:01:20.750 mounts their coils above the waterline
00:01:24.340 00:01:24.350 train you can see right there they're
00:01:27.890 00:01:27.900 above the waterline all style notice
00:01:33.770 00:01:33.780 they did don't populate the tubes so
00:01:36.859 00:01:36.869 that it stays above the waterline ream
00:01:41.560 00:01:41.570 above the waterline notice the expansion
00:01:44.899 00:01:44.909 valve is below the waterline that's
00:01:47.450 00:01:47.460 going to corrode out so if you ever saw
00:01:49.999 00:01:50.009 that you want to grab that and just lift
00:01:51.950 00:01:51.960 it up above that water is corrosive so
00:01:58.240 00:01:58.250 the Goodman didn't the replacement coil
00:02:02.450 00:02:02.460 they didn't update it so I'm going to
00:02:05.330 00:02:05.340 show how to manually raise it above the
00:02:07.789 00:02:07.799 waterline by adding some sheet metal
00:02:09.800 00:02:09.810 below they are caught
00:02:13.230 00:02:13.240 now since I'm raising the coil up an
00:02:16.120 00:02:16.130 inch I need to close it in 3/4 of an
00:02:20.500 00:02:20.510 inch so that is not too wide at the
00:02:23.980 00:02:23.990 bottom and that's why I'm going to cut
00:02:28.330 00:02:28.340 this back with my nifty cutters here
00:02:42.610 00:02:42.620 we want to be careful don't have your
00:02:45.050 00:02:45.060 steel cut your aluminum anywhere now
00:02:49.910 00:02:49.920 since I'm raising the coil 1 inch up I'm
00:02:53.210 00:02:53.220 going to make a channel which is 2 and
00:02:56.420 00:02:56.430 1/4 wide which is the coil and then to 1
00:02:59.300 00:02:59.310 inch lip I'll cut that out and fold it
00:03:05.860 00:03:05.870 so there you go
00:03:08.170 00:03:08.180 Zuma coil is going to stay high and dry
00:03:12.610 00:03:12.620 now you can get some blow-by remember to
00:03:16.729 00:03:16.739 lower pressure on the outside of the
00:03:19.430 00:03:19.440 coil here so it's going to want to kick
00:03:22.009 00:03:22.019 water splashing out like maybe want to
00:03:29.090 00:03:29.100 splash that way so all you got to do for
00:03:32.570 00:03:32.580 your blow by just put some little wall
00:03:35.800 00:03:35.810 let's just throw some pieces of sheet
00:03:38.330 00:03:38.340 metal in there don't have it rub on your
00:03:41.210 00:03:41.220 aluminum pipe it's fine to touch your
00:03:43.819 00:03:43.829 aluminum fins because they have a lot
00:03:46.310 00:03:46.320 more distance for corrosion so I noticed
00:03:50.810 00:03:50.820 one other thing just for good measure
00:03:54.640 00:03:54.650 we got aluminum really close to the
00:03:58.789 00:03:58.799 galvanized metal on the bottom row I
00:04:02.500 00:04:02.510 just put a few layers of line set tape
00:04:05.800 00:04:05.810 on the channel and so we're going to
00:04:10.100 00:04:10.110 have no aluminum touching
00:04:12.520 00:04:12.530 galvanized anywhere where it's important
00:04:16.659 00:04:16.669 so there you have it took about an hour
00:04:19.640 00:04:19.650 but it's also making a video and that
00:04:24.350 00:04:24.360 does not speed getting the fit these
00:04:27.950 00:04:27.960 will catch a blow by drop on my back
00:04:30.469 00:04:30.479 into the pan don't worry you Nova's a
00:04:34.219 00:04:34.229 splashing here's the coil mounted in the
00:04:37.700 00:04:37.710 unit so you can see not going to corrode
00:04:42.500 00:04:42.510 anymore yeah I wanted to show Goodman
00:04:46.430 00:04:46.440 redesign their condensate pan that is on
00:04:50.240 00:04:50.250 their newer hair handler unit
00:04:52.340 00:04:52.350 and though the pan is totally has
00:04:55.940 00:04:55.950 aluminium totally out of the water on
00:04:59.840 00:04:59.850 both sides high and dry that's the way
00:05:08.600 00:05:08.610 to do it even if you mouth horizontal
00:05:10.540 00:05:10.550 the aluminum is not going to be in
00:05:12.800 00:05:12.810 standing water so they figured that out
00:05:15.500 00:05:15.510 pretty fast that you want to keep that
00:05:18.380 00:05:18.390 aluminum out of the water I do like
00:05:21.320 00:05:21.330 these coils nice and shiny I hope you
00:05:28.190 00:05:28.200 liked watching the video thanks for
00:05:29.570 00:05:29.580 watching
