00:00:00.030
hello I'm mark Boston Oh with tradesman
00:00:01.850 00:00:01.860 mechanical this video is going to focus
00:00:04.160 00:00:04.170 on heat exchangers why they fail why
00:00:07.550 00:00:07.560 they crack we have collected an
00:00:11.450 00:00:11.460 assortment of heat exchanges over the
00:00:14.180 00:00:14.190 last little while and put them aside and
00:00:15.890 00:00:15.900 actually shot some video on on them for
00:00:19.040 00:00:19.050 you to see we'll be explaining from one
00:00:22.460 00:00:22.470 model to another when may have happened
00:00:25.550 00:00:25.560 and this will be a combination of you
00:00:28.820 00:00:28.830 know poor maintenance poor design to
00:00:33.680 00:00:33.690 some extent and poor installation which
00:00:36.080 00:00:36.090 in most cases would relate to poor
00:00:38.150 00:00:38.160 insulation so hang tight and we're going
00:00:41.869 00:00:41.879 to look at those exchanges right now
00:01:07.660 00:01:07.670 okay starting with this carrier mid
00:01:10.340 00:01:10.350 efficient this is a wave model WAV we
00:01:13.340 00:01:13.350 call them they made these for quite a
00:01:16.070 00:01:16.080 few years and I guess in part this is a
00:01:18.890 00:01:18.900 bit of a design flaw because a lot of
00:01:21.289 00:01:21.299 them do fail and typically they'll crack
00:01:24.050 00:01:24.060 in in this location this one just a
00:01:26.359 00:01:26.369 barely barely noticeable here but they
00:01:28.940 00:01:28.950 can get quite more crack than than this
00:01:31.609 00:01:31.619 amount and for it to get this weight you
00:01:33.950 00:01:33.960 know having a dirty air filter and
00:01:36.289 00:01:36.299 letting the furnace run harder than it
00:01:37.760 00:01:37.770 should that's going to put stress on it
00:01:39.289 00:01:39.299 and so you know part that part of this
00:01:41.719 00:01:41.729 would be designed but also would be a
00:01:44.030 00:01:44.040 little bit of poor maintenance moving on
00:01:47.300 00:01:47.310 to the next one this is your newer
00:01:50.359 00:01:50.369 Lennox model and whisper heat and again
00:01:54.160 00:01:54.170 you know in this particular model is a
00:01:56.510 00:01:56.520 cracklin on this location here and it's
00:01:59.389 00:01:59.399 typical of of this model to crack in
00:02:02.990 00:02:03.000 that location if not in this cell in one
00:02:05.359 00:02:05.369 of the other ones this one's actually
00:02:06.469 00:02:06.479 starting to crack a bit too but
00:02:08.869 00:02:08.879 nevertheless you know
00:02:10.620 00:02:10.630 Furness too hot from not cleaning the
00:02:12.870 00:02:12.880 furnace is is definitely the reason why
00:02:17.730 00:02:17.740 these things fail before they should the
00:02:22.320 00:02:22.330 next model we have here is a Bryant unit
00:02:24.990 00:02:25.000 this is actually a 2001 which is already
00:02:28.860 00:02:28.870 a high efficient furnace and we're
00:02:31.920 00:02:31.930 looking at the secondary heat exchanger
00:02:33.660 00:02:33.670 here and as you can see you've got all
00:02:35.640 00:02:35.650 this corrosion buildup and this could
00:02:38.220 00:02:38.230 happen for a couple of reasons
00:02:40.410 00:02:40.420 one of them is poor maintenance as far
00:02:44.190 00:02:44.200 as it running hot and not keeping the
00:02:47.130 00:02:47.140 condensate because this is a condensing
00:02:48.990 00:02:49.000 furnace and at the condensate trap isn't
00:02:51.420 00:02:51.430 kept clean all the water that it
00:02:53.430 00:02:53.440 collects can't get out of it and
00:02:55.010 00:02:55.020 basically you get buildup from it
00:02:57.390 00:02:57.400 sitting between cycles and it just keeps
00:02:59.760 00:02:59.770 building up and again all these calcium
00:03:01.320 00:03:01.330 deposits so the other reason this could
00:03:05.400 00:03:05.410 fail is also poor installation by having
00:03:08.760 00:03:08.770 the furnace slope the wrong way the
00:03:11.220 00:03:11.230 condensate needs to all run out to the
00:03:12.990 00:03:13.000 front and drain out and if someone
00:03:15.270 00:03:15.280 didn't level it properly then you can
00:03:17.580 00:03:17.590 get it sitting between cycles and and
00:03:20.190 00:03:20.200 building up this corrosion and basically
00:03:22.140 00:03:22.150 there isn't much you can do with this
00:03:23.490 00:03:23.500 it's got to be the place moving on to
00:03:27.930 00:03:27.940 the next one which is a carrier similar
00:03:30.000 00:03:30.010 product this is a 2007 model so it's you
00:03:34.410 00:03:34.420 know not quite ten years old and you can
00:03:37.350 00:03:37.360 see all the all the damage that it's
00:03:39.270 00:03:39.280 that has had and this one in particular
00:03:41.940 00:03:41.950 I remember that it was strictly because
00:03:44.580 00:03:44.590 the furnace was sloped the wrong way it
00:03:47.190 00:03:47.200 and the water between cycles would just
00:03:49.410 00:03:49.420 lay there and a little bit of rust would
00:03:51.510 00:03:51.520 just continue to develop more and more
00:03:53.280 00:03:53.290 and so poor installation on this one and
00:03:56.900 00:03:56.910 our last one basically is the Goodman
00:04:00.000 00:04:00.010 believe it or not only less than six
00:04:02.670 00:04:02.680 years old at 19 2010 model and this was
00:04:06.990 00:04:07.000 basically from poor installation and
00:04:09.500 00:04:09.510 overheating so this the gas valve on
00:04:12.270 00:04:12.280 this one was over firing and as you can
00:04:14.640 00:04:14.650 see all the heat marks on this thing and
00:04:16.349 00:04:16.359 it just really burnt this thing badly
00:04:18.210 00:04:18.220 and
00:04:19.550 00:04:19.560 that's that was the end result for this
00:04:21.349 00:04:21.359 guy didn't talk didn't take long for us
00:04:23.750 00:04:23.760 to figure out this was a really
00:04:24.950 00:04:24.960 dangerous situation so as you can see
00:04:28.460 00:04:28.470 there's a number reason why heat
00:04:30.170 00:04:30.180 exchangers can fail and crack and at the
00:04:33.050 00:04:33.060 same time we're gonna go back and I'll
00:04:34.370 00:04:34.380 give you some of my recommendations okay
00:04:39.200 00:04:39.210 welcome back so now that we've gone
00:04:42.350 00:04:42.360 through all those heat exchangers I
00:04:45.460 00:04:45.470 guess the situation is if that's that's
00:04:48.500 00:04:48.510 something that you've ended up with you
00:04:51.140 00:04:51.150 know replacing the heat exchanger you
00:04:53.750 00:04:53.760 know in a lot of cases can be under
00:04:55.219 00:04:55.229 warranty but then you'd still be you
00:04:57.830 00:04:57.840 know responsible for thee for the labor
00:04:59.570 00:04:59.580 of a component unless of course that's
00:05:02.030 00:05:02.040 part of your warranty as well so some of
00:05:05.090 00:05:05.100 the reasons as we've discussed I think
00:05:09.170 00:05:09.180 most of them actually boil down to just
00:05:11.450 00:05:11.460 poor installation so I guess it's
00:05:14.810 00:05:14.820 important you know if you've you know
00:05:18.110 00:05:18.120 moved into a house and you're not sure
00:05:19.760 00:05:19.770 of you know how well it was installed
00:05:21.800 00:05:21.810 and you're worried about it you should
00:05:22.969 00:05:22.979 definitely have the furnace checked you
00:05:25.340 00:05:25.350 know you have someone that's a reputable
00:05:26.870 00:05:26.880 come out and do an annual service on it
00:05:29.719 00:05:29.729 which would involved as we would do as a
00:05:32.120 00:05:32.130 first time out we would definitely check
00:05:34.040 00:05:34.050 the heat exchanger and whatever
00:05:36.200 00:05:36.210 parameters would be required to make it
00:05:39.110 00:05:39.120 as a qualified install it's going to you
00:05:41.570 00:05:41.580 where you're going to get the full life
00:05:43.130 00:05:43.140 in the furnace so as it stands if you
00:05:45.800 00:05:45.810 have a cracked heat exchanger when we
00:05:48.680 00:05:48.690 when we do an annual service and that it
00:05:51.650 00:05:51.660 becomes apparent we always recommend
00:05:54.320 00:05:54.330 that you have it the second opinion and
00:05:57.320 00:05:57.330 typically sent your gas or hydro you til
00:05:59.930 00:05:59.940 atte would be the ones that would verify
00:06:01.640 00:06:01.650 that and just because the heat exchanger
00:06:04.640 00:06:04.650 is cracked doesn't mean that you're in a
00:06:07.190 00:06:07.200 completely dangerous situation it just
00:06:09.200 00:06:09.210 puts you in a different category where
00:06:11.810 00:06:11.820 it's going to be required to to keep
00:06:14.390 00:06:14.400 track of it and to have it checked more
00:06:16.010 00:06:16.020 regularly at that point you know having
00:06:18.680 00:06:18.690 a crack in a heat exchanger
00:06:20.730 00:06:20.740 can become dangerous but once it cracks
00:06:22.830 00:06:22.840 in the crack isn't necessarily causing a
00:06:25.409 00:06:25.419 problem but it can just get larger and
00:06:27.870 00:06:27.880 become an opportunity for carbon
00:06:32.550 00:06:32.560 monoxide to to get into your residence
00:06:36.409 00:06:36.419 and if that is the case if you're
00:06:38.760 00:06:38.770 getting that carbon dioxide detector
00:06:41.430 00:06:41.440 going off you should definitely call the
00:06:42.930 00:06:42.940 fire department right away and get out
00:06:45.150 00:06:45.160 of the house nevertheless as far as heat
00:06:49.230 00:06:49.240 exchangers go we can come out you know
00:06:52.439 00:06:52.449 and if you haven't had your furnace
00:06:53.939 00:06:53.949 check for a while
00:06:55.170 00:06:55.180 we're definitely available to come out
00:06:57.029 00:06:57.039 and help you with that I hope you got
00:06:59.129 00:06:59.139 some value from this video please check
00:07:02.760 00:07:02.770 on a ruddy vide other videos on YouTube
00:07:04.800 00:07:04.810 and thank you for watching
00:07:15.390 00:07:15.400 you
